Racism
    #7376493 - 09/06/07 09:45 PM (16 years, 6 months ago)

I go to a college in the north-east USA, and the amount of racism and lack of intermingling is really astonishing.

There is so much cliquishness among different ethnicities. In my high school the amount of racist bullshit spewed from people's mouths always sickened me. I thought at a well-respected, diverse-on-paper university like the one I'm attending, things would be different.

Today somebody hung a noose from a tree outside of the school's cultural center. WTF! As if it wasn't bad enough that this stuff is still happening in backwoods Mississippi (Google the Jena Six if you don't know what I'm talking about), I find it's almost as bad here, in a place considered one of the most diverse and progressive in the nation.

Forget about 2012, a great spiritual awakening, all that stuff - how about the most basic awakening to our common nature?? If you really can't see that black skin doesn't make a person inferior to you, you're a dipshit.

Do you see a lot of racism where you live? In what forms?

I'm not.

Edit: Also, there is a difference between being socially conditioned to react a certain way to people who look different from you, and consciously choosing not to consort with any members of other races/hanging nooses on trees.

No, not at all. At my university there are plenty of blacks, whites, hispanics, arabs, asians, and indians. I have never seen racist violence or heard racists comments (except for the usual 'white man cant dance' and '100 mexicans per car' type jokes which are harmless unless you're a cry baby).

My community college however was a hotbed of 'la raza' activity. It was disgusting.

It's all relative, I guess, but yes I see racism every day.

Mostly it's against aboriginals ("indians"). In my city substance abuse and crime rates among aboriginals is disproportionately high to the extreme. I suppose many people rationalize racism against them because violence and alcoholism is so widespread among the native population. It must be tough to get ahead as a native because of that.

It's almost as if racism in general is frowned upon here, but racism against aboriginals is somehow normal and accepted.

Around here a lot of people use the word "paki" a lot in reference to anyone of middle eastern descent (or anyone who appears to be.) Even some of my friends and acquaintances do that.

Many people still freely use the word "Jew" as a verb to describe ripping someone off.

There are not many blacks here and I don't see many examples of racism against them. Same with hispanics.

Far more often that racist comments, however, I hear sexist comments towards women.

Black people are more racist than white people. Walk through the black neighborhoods in my city and you'll get insults and objects thrown at you for being white.

It's simply easier to relate to those who are from a similar ethnic and cultural background. In high school my best friend was black, but I couldn't stand hanging out with him and his black friends because there was no way at all I could relate to them.

But you could say the same thing about a black person walking through a poor white area.

It just sucks that people don't differentiate the fact that it's the individuals who are bad/disgusting/annoying/ignorant. They aren't willing to put the blame on the sole person that is causing the problem. Instead they choose to discriminate against the whole ethnic group that person belongs to.

If you must hate something, hate the person and not the race.

That being said, a little folksy racism at the right time is pretty amusing.

Racism in a city of millions of people of all shapes and colors and ethnicities isn't prominent...NYC teaches you to live with people nothing like you because you have to. That being said, I see racism every day. It'll always be here.
