The Beast Within
    #737555 - 07/10/02 06:11 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

Have you ever noticed how different people seem similar to certain animals?
I think we all have our "animal spirit", that we have some kind of intimate connection with. Most people are consciously unaware of it, but it lurks in the subconscious nonetheless. Ever since my step out of early childhood I have felt a connection to the snake. Not a fascination exactly, but an intimate connection in the back of my mind. Almost every mushroom trip I see them, they are a source of all types of feelings for me- fear, love, energy, destruction, light, darkness, death, etc.
Does anyone else have a particular animal they feel akin to?
My friend says he feels a connection with the wolf.
Just curious...

I feel an intense connection to a hawk..or eagle.. my spirit animal
I also feel a connection to dolphins

I often have flying dreams...gliding over majestic land with an ultimate feeling of freedom and intense love
I also have dreams of swimming through the ocean with this same feeling

I once heard that when the human spirit is first formed, before it incarnated into a human body, it goes through the perception of several different animals. It actually "sees" through the eyes of an animal for a certain period of time, to learn basic survival tactics, and other 'instinctual' traits. I think this is the basis for the indian totem.

Canines (wolves and dogs). I've been known to sniff women's crotches upon meeting them, I drink from toilets, lick my own balls, eat canned horse meat and turn around three times before sleeping in my den. Oh, and I love to play fetch.

There are 3 animals that I feel I have deep connections with. Each of the three corresponds to a certain element as well.

One is the turtle, symolizing earth, longevity, and ancient wisdom.
Another is the eagle, symbolizing air, freedom, power, and keen awareness.
The last is the dolphin, symbolizing water, playfulness, intelligence, and a loving spirit.

I like the symbol of the eagle so much that I got it tattoed on my back:

Although i cant be sure which animal is my spirit animal, i can tell you that my traits resemble that of a goat. Im cautious, practical, patient, reliable and determined. Calculative is also a trait i find the goat and I have in common. Also, my Zodiac sign being a Capricorn kind of fits in.

How come the skeptic's posts all sound similar? The only thing missing is Swami replying with something like "My spirit animal is pussy" or some other sarcastic comment aimed towards women.

It is very exciting that you should mention this because just a few weeks ago, while tripping, I suddenly felt close to or felt that I was an octopus. Since then they slip into my mind while meditating and I just feel an overall closeness to them that is very powerful.

So, I believe I am somehow linked to the Octopus.

I don't think I have to even mention mine (the name sez it all)

On a side note though: oddly enough, I wrote a poem a while back titled 'The Beast Within' (which of course, is why I decided to check out this particular thread) I'd post it, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the topic...so I'm kind of guessing it would seem out of place.

>So, I believe I am somehow linked to the Octopus.

Ia Ia Cthulhu Fhtagn! I too am "linked to the Octopus" but only on an intellectual level. Let's hook-up when R'lyeh rises, yeah?

I have found in my experience that your spirit animal is not always what you think it is or even an animal that you "like" very much. For instance, like many others, I thought my spirit animal was the wolf (this was years ago) because I liked wolves and thought they were cool. gGod I was young! That whole lone wolf obvious association crap delusion... sorry to all the actual wolves out there!

Then about 3 years ago I followed the proper procedure for contact with your spirit animal and guess what? My spirit animal is the magpie. It's that crow-sized bird with black, white and dark blue feathers. I like the magpie now but at first I was horrified and pissed off. Magpie! A fucking MAGPIE?! But that's how it is - much wisdom from the magpie.

Well, I dunno bout Shroomisms reply to this ... that site seems to have the points down, particularly in the spirit animal ident area but the way I read it looked as if the site was advocating CHOOSING your animal.

Which seems like setting yerself up for disappointment. This leads to people picking all the "cool" animals and hoping to become more like them through association. Wolves, dolphins and hawks/eagles being the most common it seems. But the animal (being clear minded, brutally honest and not subject to delusion like us) is attracted to that which is most like them within the person. The link-up with a spirit animal is, sorry to say, entirely up to the animal.

I was given the procedure by a Kwakiutl shaman. Sorry, but it was a working of his own design and cannot be revealed, though you can probably piece together the basics with a little reading. Exhausting. But in the end the animal chose me. And like I said before it was surprising. But its worked out well.

Huh? The site says this

Soon the image of an animal will appear.

It may - or may not - be the animal you are expecting - so have no expectations.

Uh huh. Well, let's go through the steps. That site also says...
"Find or quiet place or just relax at your computer"...

then gives relaxation techniques followed by a little creative visualisation "Close your eyes . . . Still your thoughts"...

and then voila! "You may see a pretty color . . . or shape . . . coming into view"...

you have your power animal via telepathic contact "Telepathically ask your power animal to show itself to you on the screen in your mind."

But "Be patient! Your third eye (pineal gland) must open before you can see images." Or you can tell just tell yourself that you're seeing your power animal. It's much of a muchness when you access the "shamanic culture" through the internet and meet your power animal while sitting in front of your computer.

What I'm saying is that in authentic shamanic experience, you do not request that your spirit guide show itself. Granted, you do go out looking for it with high hopes, but it shows itself for its own reasons when and how it wants and only when it decides that YOU are ready. You can't just ring a telepathic bell and have it come running. And when it does finally show it is unmistakable and objective. In my case the spirit showed itself along with a flock of it's counterparts in the phenomenal world, a synchronous event that could not be denied.

For me the Octopus was totally and completely out of the blue...I have always had an interest in Ocean Life and I have studied many of the Ocean's creatures but I never remeber giving Octopus' any more thought than anything else.

I was incredibly excited about it when I discovered this...I think it was because instantly I found a respect for them...Octopus' are awesome!

i suppose i'd need some sort of revelation basis for having, needing, feeling, whatever an akinness to an animal.

probably doesn't count...but i've always wanted a pair of baby snow seal boots. i'd like to find one on a beach suffering from an oil spill and then club it to death. i think this is all part of my reaction to eco-nazis who would rather spend their time and money helping helpless animals instead of helpless humans. boy are we in bad shape on this planet. don't feel flamed i've merely succumbed to my generationx impulse for cynicism. i think a metaphorical relation to an animal is just fine, after all jesus was the "lamb" of god, the "lion" of judah, and jehovah bore the israelites out of egypt on "eagle's wings".

I often see spiders in my trips. My most recent and awakening experience on psychedelics was spurred by a spider that crossed my path. Other subjects in my trips have included the mouse, the dolphin, the cat, and numerous plants.

Platypus, yep that's it!

No wait, a skunk.

Armadillo.

I got it, a bonobo. That's my final answer.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Yea, Lizards and other reptiles are pretty slimey and nasty.

I kept seing lots of serpents when I closed my eyes the other night on fungi,  and I understood their sentience. Oh yea, Sharks too.

Coincidently I am afraid of snakes and sharks. (i won't go over my waist in the ocean)

Oh yea, it was MY fault for bringing this thread back, SORRY hahah....
:crazy:Welcome to the fold, gentlemen.
