Tripping while on call

I’m on call 24/7 and actually get about 5 calls a year. Every call has been between noon and 6 PM.
However, it turns out that one of those times I got a call (the worse support problem I ever had) I was tripping my balls off. I turned the ringers off all the phones but while on my way down I played the messages and found my answering machine had like 3 calls for the last 4 hours for this big problem. The 4th time they called I was still tripping, but figured I better pick up. I told them I was sick as hell and was to out of it to handle this issue.
Now when I trip, I worry I may get a support call. What can I tell myself to not worry about checking the answering machine? None of the stuff I’m on call for is super duper critical and I never said I was available 24/7, but still I always want to be a good employee.

I think that was just a huuuge coincidence. 5 times a year and you just so happen to be tripping, highly doubt that will happen any time soon. I wouldnt worry so much.

Yeah, that's definitely a shitty situation. Just the nagging thought that you could, however small the chance, get an important call while tripping would suck. I have no idea what you could tell yourself to worry less. I think that planning your trips in advance and letting your company know you won't be available during that time (due to whatever reason) could be a possible avenue to ending that particular branch of anxiety.
good luck.

The person said 24/7 meaning there always on call but only get about 5 calls a year. How that irresponsible is the person never supposed to trip?
If the calls are that infrequent i wouldn't worry about it

Me too. One of the only times I had to handle a serious phone call tripping, I thought it was SO WEIRD how there was a voice coming out of this little thing I was holding. Soon enough I wasn't even listening to who I was talking to and just looking at the phone trying to figure out how this voice was talking to me.

So basically about 1 out of every 73 days you will get a call. You just have to hope it's not that one day, and do your best.

Yes, pretty slim chances, plus like I said, I have never got a call after 6. Plus, I'm not on call for serious emergencies like where someone needs medical help or the company will loose any more.
They don't pay me anything to be on call, screw em.

as far as im concerned if you only get called like 5 times a year and if they do happen to call YOU on a day when YOU'RE tripping then use the same excuse and tell em you're sick they cant get angry. and odds are everytime they call it wont be a problem for you to go do the job. And for all those saying "dont trip when you're on call" or "you're so irresponsible its your fuckin job... your life" fuck you, there is so much more important shit then a job and livelihood keep yourself happy thats all. and as far as bein irresponsible... that's bullshit its never irresponsible to trip with the chance of them calling you on a day you are trippin being so goddamn miniscule.

If you've never gotten a call after 6pm then what's the problem?

Yup. On-call employees should get paid for it. I used to get 2 hours of pay for being on call for 12 hour stretches.

Hey, I never told them I would be available 24/7. If I'm there, I will pick up the call, if not, to bad. Plus they pay me well, and the job is pretty good overall. It is not so easy to just switch jobs. I'm deeply in a career and don't want to leave my tenure on the table.

what in the hell is it that you do anyways?
