I was walking in the park today and found a patch of these guys right next to the trail, next to rocks in mossy ground. I didnt have my camera at the time so no habitat picks.:( they were pretty. there was a whole patch but I only took 2.

cap of the smaller one

Stipe of smaller one, looks like three rings

gills of smaller one

picture of stipe where viel has yet to detatch

cap of larger one is printing

Habitat: deciduous forest, in woods, amoung mossy soil, next to trail.
Cap: large, 2-5 inches wide, hemispherical to flat, golden yellow fading around edges, all white warts, striations around edges
Gills: white, crowded, free
Stipe: white, fleshy, fairly uniform width with bolbus volva with rings (it looks like) at base. some veil remnants about halfway up.
brusing: no aparent brusing
Smell: very mild, sweet, almost non existant
location: NE USA
I think there are Amanitas but not sure what species.
Maybe a Amanita Muscaria Var.? probably wishfull thinking. or Amanita Inaurata? but it looks like they have rings and Amanita Inaurata dosent have rings if im correct. im probably wrong.
Im just glad I found them they are so beautiful.

Very nice specimens and good photos.
The tan capped Amanita species are tough to ID to species because there are so many of them and they look so similar. The volva does resemble an A. muscaria volva, but that's not enough here to make an ID with. It's definitely not A. inaurata, which has a very striate margin and gray warts and no ring (as you noted - you were right!).
If you want to look around at Amanitas, check out [url=http://pluto.njcc.com/~ret/amanita/mainaman.html#continue]this web site, which is dedicated to research on the genus. It should give you an idea of how confusing they can be.
Happy mushrooming!
