Same this happened to me, one of my cakes has an alcoholic smell. It looked perfectly fine but if i didnt smell it im sure it would have attacked my other cakes.

Not smelling is not good because you can miss bacteria. The way to do it is to smell carefully! Go at least a foot away and fan the air above a cake towards you, it it smells bad dont go in for a closer sniff throw the bitch out!

Fd

Smelling jars that are 'possibly contam'd' i think is just stupid regardless on how you do it. Even wafting can bring mold spores etc into your air way. If your going to smell it smell it with the lid on and becareful (stick your nostril on the innoculation hole. I know people do inhale the shit all the time and nothing happens. But my philosophy is 'Shit Happens' and it will happen. I'm just keeping people safe period. I've smelt contam'd jars before just by opening the incubator, trust me you will know. And like Fd said, dont fuck around with contams..if you suspect contam..at the least isolate it and check back on it..otherwise toss it. It doesn't hurt to throw away a cake.
