Spawning with gallon jars and rePCing failed ones
    #7358885 - 09/01/07 01:18 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

Ive been growing for a number of years and have recently switched to using gallon mason jars for my spawn to cut down on the work. I PC'd them at 15psi for 70-80 minutes and still have gotten bacterial contaminations. Ive only have to PC for 40 minutes with quart jars, how long should i PC gallon jars for?

Also, can i just recook my failed jars?

Same here, I run mine at 15psi for 90 to 120 min. But I use bags.

Yeah 2 hours should be good. 90 minutes at 18 psi will also do the trick.

Do not re-cook contam'd jars. You can kill all life in the jar, but you cannot remove any toxic byproducts from the jar. Many bacterial illnesses are not caused by living bacteria but by poisons they make.

So it's poison not bacteria themselves kill mycelium? Maybe cleaning substrate with water may help remove toxins?

RR has said a number of times that he has boxes of gallon jars collecting dust in storage. Jars of this size have a tendency to become anaerobic and stall/become bacterial no matter how long you PC them. That being said, PC that amount of substrate minimally for 90min or you are asking for trouble. How wet is your substrate? What kind of lids are you using?

Although bags are much more suited to large amounts of substrate, If you must use gallon jars, try and orient them on their side at about 45 degrees to improve gas exchange after the shake at 30%. Over size, over wet, and oxygen deficient jars will go bacterial much more than properly prepared ones.

Yeah to dump them out w/ out endangering your environment & health

But not to re- inoculate.
The grains will be to dry...& highly susceptible to contamination (even after the PC run)

Also, i know youve been growing for yrs but you should PC quarts for a minimum of 90mins.
For gallon jars/5lb bags I do 2hr30min - 3hrs @16-17psi

People don't even use half gallon jars cause they stall. Use quart jars or bags.

I use half gallon jars and bags that hold 2 gallons of spawn. No issues here.

Cat used 70 to 100ml jar PF cakes (BRF:verm 1:2) They are wet but air gaps visible. Double foil lids. So gas exchange is necessary for spore germination? Strangely bacterial contamination odor very weak and even pleasant unlike in previous failed PF cakes.

And you're getting lucky with the jars. It's not a good method and will eventually fuck you over.

Cubensis are aggressive. You can pull off some crazy shit sometimes. That doesn't mean it's a reliable way.

Luck?  I've been using half gallon jars for half a decade.
