hey all, just wanted to share my latest harvest 1.8 lbs grown on two large straw wreaths from hobby lobby. while not the best substrate in the world by any means, its viable.

I've seen the little bales of straw they sell at Michael's Art stores here locally, and always thought they'd be funny to use. The price though is prohibitive for me. A bale of straw costs about $5-10 in South Florida. One of those mini-bales from the art store by me cost about the same $5, but are only 1/20 of the amount of straw...
Anyway, nonetheless, your project is still very cool - my suggestion from looking at the pics are that you still need to increase your oxygen/FAE in your FC. When oysters get way too much CO2, they form weird coral shapes, or do not form at all. In your pics, it looks like the FAE is ALMOST there. When you get it right, the oysters will lay out in a shelf, looking much more horizontal. Kind of like this - this is mother nature's FAE

or this

thanks for the feedback and the suggestions. =)
and yes, this type of growing is very cost prohibitive, to say the least. as my luck runs, straw of any kind is extremely hard to come by. a normal call to a feed store warrants "straw? naw, we got lots of hay and coastal grass though"
and unfortunately not enough care was given to these guys during the duration of fruiting in the greenhouse. very minimal fanning, usually less than once a day, if any for days on end (humidifier running half on/half off as the sole source of fresh air and oxygen). which probably accounts for the coral formations like you said, jeremy. in addition, being on the top shelf of a full greenhouse probably allows alot of co2 to sink down into the bottom, from other stuff. =(
in past grows, i usually do them open air on a shelf in a room, maybe with an oven bag over the oyster bag during pinning, and they're like you linked, shelf-like. =)
once again thanks for the feedback and good info.

No problem man! You actually did not get the coral formations I was talking about. They really look like underwater life! What you have is FAE that is good enough to avoid the coral formations, but not quite enough to get the natural look. But it sounds like you know what was going on, so you're all good!
