I would say you're on the right track with the not allowing the cooker to seal. I did that a few times to save time and it didn't work out to my advantage. My cookers are small so I can only do three jars at a time which sucks. However I did use a closet for quite a while and no problems with that although I'm sure it was reasonably dirty/damp.

I let my P.cooker cool for about 15 min. then I slowly release some of the pressure, by tapping the rocker now and again. This works fine for me (knock on wood). If you do it to fast then you create a vacuum. A very strong one at that. So if you must do this, then be really slow at it. Better to wait over night.
