^ Thank you very much, that's EXACTLY the way I felt through 3 hours of Inland Empire. There's way better ways to piece a movie together than to take 3 hours to put it in your artistic view. Mullholland drive was the same way, as wost lost highway.

You're not supposed to "get it." Lynch's films are like paintings; the concern isn't with a linear narrative, but rather with the ideas and images and sounds and the feelings that they create for the viewer.

But when the viewer sees that there isn't an underlying message to the whole scene then the absence of purpose and meaning is what the image speaks to the viewer. Once you realize that there's no actual story behind what you're seeing, you can only pretend that the obvious director-desired sentiments are truly present, and then you're lying to yourself. By not containing those actual feelings within the work the director is saying "well.. I'm kinda thinking of something that's like this, but I don't really know how to actually accomplish it," and in the end they're begging you to do all the work within your own head without having presented you with what they pretended to.
Instead of watching Jurassic park why not just think dinosaurs? It would save the filmakers a lot of time and effort, but you'd still have to give them the credit for suggesting the idea to you.
I think the 2 min short film says "scary stuff goes here." As soon as someone actually puts the scary stuff there, let me know. But how can I even be sure that it's supposed to be scary when no context was given for any of it... because I've seen similar effects in horror movies? Without the context of what was going on in those horror movies the effects themselves do not denote scariness.
An argument isn't loud noises, and scariness isn't a scream. Looks like... but isn't.
Sorry for my rant, I shame myself.

If I'm not supposed to get it, then what the fuck am I watching it for?

Different strokes for different folks. This isn't an argument I care to fight or defend. We will simply have to agree to disagree.
