A question about plumbing...
    #7350240 - 08/29/07 11:09 PM (16 years, 6 months ago)

Should I be concerned about the amount of substrate and casing material I loose down the drain in my kitchen sink? Can your average sink handle a large amount of WBS, coir, hpoo, etc, or am I setting myself up for a plumbing disaster?

Both practices are in effect, but slip-ups are unavoidable, and what I'm really wondering about is the small particles that slip through the strainers building up in there somewhere.

I don't think you have anything to worry about! They sell Garbage disposal units at you local hardware store and you can even buy enzyme pills for your home plumbing.

enzymes work great with rye grains. would probably work equally as well with wbs.. i try NOT to let verm go down the drain.

dont worry. ive sent perlite, vermiculite, wbs and more down the kitchen sink before without any clogging/trouble. just leave the water running at full for a few seconds after something goes down there.

I spent 6 hours snaking out my kitchen sink one time...
due to a Vermiculite blockage in my pipes...
and I have a disposal.

It was a royal pain in my ass...
and I own my own electric hand held snake...
from back in my pipe fitting days.

I ran the snake from the kitchen sink all the way out to the street...
it totally sucked!~
So I installed a trap down in my basement to make things easier if I ever had to work on my kitchen pipes again.

I have always used enzyme powder on a regular basis in my kitchen sink...
but it only works on organic material and grease.

your trap will catch a lot of it

that's eally easy to remove, just two nuts, clean it, replace it

snaking is usually requied when the buildup hardens or congeals

i'vewashed lots of stuff down my drains, and i kinda do drain cleaning/snaking pretty regularly, so i have some experience in this..

if you notice your drain is draining slower than normal, fill the sink about halfway with HOT water, open the drain, and quickly, befoe the water drains out, use a plunger on it..it should push whatever through, and the rest of the water in the basin will push it out of the pipe, and on down the line. Repeat he process a few times untill it is draining to your satisfaction. THis will wok for most soft blockages, and loose stuff blocking the line. If that will not wok, it's stuck itght, go rent a snake from home depot, or a hardware store..they're vey easy to use, just NEVER EVER use rubber gloves, or thin vinyl latex gloves, the snake cable will catch it and twist your hand up really quickly. Use leather outdoor work gloves, or cloth gardening gloves to protect your hands.
If you DO ever snake your drains, make sure when you are done, you FILL the sink completely with hot water, and then allow it to drain. Filling the sink fills the pipe with a greater amount of water, and washes all the broken up gunk out a lot better and more completely than just running water afterwards.
Most standard household kitchen sink drain lines are 1 1/2 inch lines, and they eventually couple into a 3" line..most usually, all you'll need to do is push the blockage in the 1 1/2 line to the 3" line, and it should wash away ok.
