I am trying to find a simple tek that I can use for growing oyster out of a phonebook for a classroom project. I dont have a flow hood yet, but will probably have one soon. I hope that it is not necessary. Thanks for your help.

You can inoculate pf cakes with oyster mycelium and grow out your spawn that way without a pressure cooker.
Cut out a couple of dvd case sized holes out of the middle of the phone book, so you'll have a place to put a few slices of your cakes so they can inoculate the paper. After cutting the openings, you can boil the phonebook in water for a few minutes to sterilize/hydrate it, and then when it cools, simply open it up with clean hands and put your spawn into the places you've previously cut out.
Did you see my phone book thread in the gourmet and medicinal mushroom forum? If not, take a look. Below are Hericium(Lion's Mane) but oysters grow from the same substrates. I'll have some oyster pictures on phonebooks soon. They're pinning now along with the Shiitake. RR

bibles work better than phone books. Less contams that way. Bacteria and molds dont like the holy spirit.

Thanks RR. That is a lot more simple than I thought it would be. I am teaching a fifth grade nature/biology/sustainability class this fall and need some fun activities and things. I thought this would be fun. I did not see that thread, but I will definitely check it out. Thanks.

Rogger, I can't find that thread. I can find one that you were giving advice on and thats all. I think I have got it from here anyway. But if you read this thread again, would you mind posting a link to the thread you are talking about? Thanks again.
Right now I have some grain of oyster, maitake(spelling?) and ganoderma. I am going to use phone books for all of them now. I wonder how P. azuresence would do?

I've grown P cyanescens on paper before, so I'm sure it would do well on phonebooks. Oyster and Reishi will grow well on phone books for sure. Here's a Reishi below.
I'm producing a DVD right now on recycling with mushrooms, and it's aimed at families with kids, as well as schools, church groups, scouts, etc., as a way to get the kids involved with growing. If you want to post in the other thread in Gourmet, I'll try to help you get started. RR
