Do I need to lower my humidity now?
    #7336334 - 08/26/07 01:24 PM (16 years, 7 months ago)

Hey I'm just a little unsure of at what point I have 'initiated pinning' to which I should drop the humidity to between 85%-92% from what I have read. Right now my hygrometers in both containers read 92% but I believe it is more accurately between 95-98% right now.

So looking at the two pictures I'm not sure if I am supposed to see the actual pins before I lower it or what, These have both been pretty much fully colonized for a week and I'm just awaiting pins. I'm just a little concerned I was supposed to have already lowered it. btw, temps on these I keep between 68-72 at all times.

edit: Oops I just realized I posted the same picture twice, but regardless the two containers are about in the same position, I actually only see about 3-4 distinct mushrooms having formed so far and nothing else. Those have popped up in the past 1-2 days.

Correct. Keep your humidity upper 90's from initiation through harvest.

then all the time I spent tweaking my FC to get 92% RH was a waste??
So I can nix my humidifier set up and go with perlite for casings??

For best results, shoot for upper 90's humidity and as much air exchange as you can provide, while maintaining that humidity level. Cased substrates are 'tolerant' of lower humidity, but primordia form, and mushrooms grow best in near saturation relative humidity, with plenty of fresh air.

I try and fan it out at least 4 times a day, if not 5 or 6. However, I read that 85-92% is best for casings after the mushrooms start to pin because it will cause them to get bigger. Something about they are able to utilize the oxygen better since the air isn't so saturated with water, but I don't remember where I read that at.
