My poor peyote.
    #7333530 - 08/25/07 04:22 PM (16 years, 7 months ago)

I had a peyote button the size of a golf ball or so rooting in a pot of dirt. My fucking piece of shit dog you see over in my avator happened to get into my room when I wasnt home and ate the top of it and the roots off.

Can it be saved?

There is a little flesh missing from the top exposed the green mushy part and the roots seem to be gone. I repotted it but expect the worst.

This is the second time he's done this.

The first time he ate about 4 inches of san pedro, Literally ate it, spines and all. He definetly seemed to have effects from this ( about 50 pounds 7 months old at the time ) he acted extremely nervous and scared and actually peed all over himself in his kennel.

Durban do you have a good link?

If there's just a little missing from the top and the roots are gone, it may be better to let it callous over and repot after all the wounds have dried to avoid possible rot.

It would try to set roots after drying...  I know I've had failed grafts throw out roots into the air after the bottom cut had healed.

Kinda how I knew the graft had failed.

i think you would want to let the parts that got bitten become completely calloused over and healed before you repot it or the plant could rot/become susceptible to other ailments. my dog at the top of my san pedro when he was a puppy but it didnt turn out bad since the pedro grew 2 arms and 2 pups.

I would put it on a rack of some kind where air can circulate around it so that almost every part of the cactus is open to the air...a screen of some sort would be perfect. This will let all the cuts callous over and then it will be ready to put out roots when it gets put back in the soil. Don't water for a long time after putting back in the soil. The cactus will put out roots looking for water and then is when you can water. Any sooner and it might cause rot.

Don't worry, it won't hurt it and will actually help it in the long run.
