Straw in hot room
    #7333650 - 08/25/07 05:53 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Is there any relation the the thickness of spawn/substrate to the amount of heat it produces?

The room will be 80 degrees and I am worried that will be too hot and destroy the mycelium.

Would using a thin layer like 3 inches in a smaller tub be enough to keep temps low enough?

in most cases, that temperature will be fine, given whatever depth you wanna use.
but, you can help matters by keeping any trays away from other trays, and preferably on wire shelves to allow even cooling on the undersides, even if its only a cooling of 4-6 degrees from substrate to room temperature, it should be enough.

as for the deeper substrate being warmer than a thinner one...id imagine this to be true, afterall, more energy (heat) being produced.

True. Your temps are perfect for colonization/spawn run, but a bit high for fruiting. Try to keep fruiting temps in the optimal range, between 70-75 degrees F if possible.

As long as you have proper FAE, it could still produce nicely.

Would it be fine when fruiting to use a fan with a filter attached to cool it down? My understanding is that during colonization you don't want any airflow because of the risk for contaminations, but once fruiting the risk greatly drops.

Just make sure you keep your humidity up or your fruits will abort on you before they mature. You might want to try using a cool mist humidifier. If you put a few ice cubes in the resevior you could take care of cooling fae and humidity with one device
