 Share ratios on private trackers suck! How to improve?

My share ratio is having problems getting above .4 on a private tracker. I don't know if its because I've got a pretty tenuous connection to my neighbor's wifi (with their permission- don't criticize me!).
How to improve? There are always more seeds than leeches, and I have trouble getting people to upload to- I have to limit my downloading to avoid getting banned.
I know the bitorrent developer is against mandatory share ratios for this very reason, but that doesn't help me- I've got my upload limit set to auto. I'm using azureus if this matters.
Any help is greatly appreciated, I'm not trying to be a leech, I just can't get uploads!

That's the whole point of private trackers, you're required to put back a reasonable amount of bandwidth compared to what you take out of the swarm. Share and share alike, similar in principal to the Ratio FTP sites back in the day.
You have port forwarding working properly? - With uPnP enabled all around it usually 'just works.'
Disable DHT on the privately tracked torrents you're seeding and let them seed 'till they hit a 1.0 or above ratio - preferably 2.0 actually. i.e. you give back twice as much as you took for the torrent - not only just a cool thing to do but it gives you more slack for downloading if your overall ratio is well over one.
Simple as that.
Also, the auto upload limit on azureus is rather flakey - you may wish to consider figuring out what your max upload rate should be and set it manually. I ended up dropping azureus for uTorrent on windows cause of that as well as the massive resource bloat.

Yeah azeurus is pretty bloated on memory. I'm usually at about 75 megs at least. How is utorrent or whatever you said you use?

'utorrent' is not actualy spelled 'u'-torrent. The 'u' is just the closest letter in appearence on the keyboard to the symbol for 'micro' (which is more like a y and a u combined.)
So it's really 'microtorrent'.
That should give you an idea of it's size.

Yea what ^rune said. The program itself is less than 1 megabyte.
I'm running at about 20mb used by the process with 10 torrents loaded 5 seeding and one downloading
Azureus has more 'features' and the whole plugin scheme - but I found I never used any of that.
uTorrent is my pick for windows systems - I dunno if it would necessarily help with your ratio issues though.
You say you have a 'tenuous' wifi connection?
Perhaps there's a bit of data corruption going on, at least on the uplink - most torrent programs drop and ban peers if they send too many blocks that fail hash checks. I don't really have experiance with such a hypothetical situation - Just an idea I pulled out of my ass.

That's the thing with private trackers. People have to be picky and can't go around downloading stuff all the time. That makes it hard sometimes to upload what you downloaded.
The only thing you can do is leave the torrent open. It might take months to send back 1:1 on an unpopular torrent. Just leave the client running in the background all the time and wait. Nothing else you can do.

This has been my recent experience. Leave the torrent open until the tracker removes it or you get a decent ratio on the torrent.

if the tracker removes one of my seeds for inactivity, i like to recheck it for quality and then re-up it, kind of like bumping a thread.
