humidifying: add bleach???
    #733284 - 07/09/02 08:21 AM (22 years, 6 months ago)

I've been using H2O2 with my perlite.
I still have a slight contam problem.
I've read that I can use a bit of bleach.
Would that kill my cakes?
I put my cakes on top of pierced pieces of tin foil.
And lately I've been discovering that the mycelium has been growing on perlite and budding with little mushrooms.
I thought just plain perllite did nothing.

As long as the mycelium isn't touching the perlite with bleach in it then I don't think you will have a problem. It might not be the perlite that is giving you the contams. Do you use a pressure cooker to sterilize the jars or do you boil?

I had a problem when I first started when my cakes became contaminated after birth...most had to due with not fanning enough..if you let stagnant air sit in there contams will eat away at your cakes....fan fan fan. And you're right...perlite itself does nothing more then humidify your terrarium...but..your mycelium is reaching out for a drink from that sweet sweet perlite and sprouting mushrooms...very comon if the cakes are close enough to the perlite or in your case you have holes punched in it...which you dont really need...just place them on the sterile foil
