Right on!
-------------------- “Strengthened by contemplation and study, I will not fear my passions like a coward. My body I will give to pleasures, to diversions that I’ve dreamed of, to the most daring erotic desires, to the lustful impulses of my blood, without any fear at all, for whenever I will— and I will have the will, strengthened as I’ll be with contemplation and study— at the crucial moments I’ll recover my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Ive gotten a bit farther into it now, and its definitely a challenging read. I basically have to have dictionary.com and to a lesser extent wikipedia open while reading this book

This method of reading it takes away from the magic. Just ride it out and don't feel obligated to have an explanation for every last detail.

Hm, I guess Im totally the opposite. If theres a word in the English language I do not know that Joyce uses, I find it useful to look it up. After all it is part of my language and I realistically should know it. The wikipedia stuff I have to use less, but for stuff like 'Agenbite of inwit' that he uses a few times Id like to know what it means. Finnegans Wake is an impossible read, but have fun with it. Check out A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man if you want more Joyce, that is a quite excellent book

Breaking Open the Head..
About psychedelics, their use around the world, experience, and the importance of the knowledge they gift to humanity.
I hope to be picking up 2012: The return of Quetzalcoatl (SP?) by the same author, Daniel Pinchbeck. And also hope to be getting The Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley.

Im on page 160 right now, but I haven't been reading it that frequently. I figure Ill be done in a few weeks as over the weekends I usually step the reading up. If you get stumped about what hes talking about at any point though check this website out http://www.columbia.edu/~fms5/ulys.htm It has the full text plus annotations for all but like 3 of the chapters

160? Damn, you're movin' right along. I'm only 200 pages in and I've been reading it all summer. Nice work man, and thanks for the link.

I had trouble with the first three chapters. The main character Daedalus was a literary man, so his monologues in his head were all really complex with references to shit Ive never heard of. However Leopold Bloom is more your average man, so Ive actually been really enjoying the book now as I can understand most of whats referenced.

I'll be picking up Jurassic Park soon. I heard it is amazing, as well as The Lost World. Then I might read Billy and the Cloneasaurus.

Just finished The Subtle Knife, now on to The Amber Spyglass to finish off the trilogy.

Man, do we have similar literary tastes. Jurassic Park and The Lost World are both great, easy reads. I actually enjoyed the latter more but it's been a long time since I've read them. I've read all of Crichton's stuff and it doesn't get any better than those two.

I was going to wait a week or so before getting another book but it seems more and more likely that my feet will carry me to the library this afternoon I'm sure I'll love it, my friend who always recommends me the best books really loved these two and also thought The Lost World was better.
