Making money?

Has anyone here been able to turn their favorite hobby into a little spare cash selling to specialty markets?
What legal species seem to give the greatest profit potential for time and effort involved?

The proof is in the pudding.

Hey Mycotek, I'll give yah $10,000 if you can show me how to "easily cultivate" Matsutake I know, your hands (typing) got ahead of your thought processes.
I figure when it comes to mushrooms the North American market is wearing blinders. Still the common button mushroom accounts for 90% of all consumption. I think the thing to do would be to find a good strain of a typical button which will take well to straw because unless you have alot of startup money, you aren't making compost. And pick up the manual " growing mushrooms with H2O2 by Dr. Rush Wayne. Why buttons? because that is what the public wants. Sucks eh.

i would look into specialty markets, health food stores, etc. and see if they would be willing to sell your mushrooms for you. I believe this would be the hardest part, as you have to compete with much larger grow operations who can afford to sell their stuff for cheap.

The Matsutake (pine mushrooms) price varies but that is close enough. One year I dried a bunch and took the to the chinatown the next spring thinking i could make some money. They already had genuine Japanese matsutake on the shrlf for about $10 a dried dozen!
It should also be mentioned that because your mushrooms have not been inspected by any health board, the restuarants are not allowed to serve them to the public. Here in small town Canada, they are not so fussy but I've heard they are a lot stricter in the US.

Of course it can be done, but think about the math first- organic button mushrooms retail for about 7$ a pound, which means you will have to wholesale them for 3-4$ a pound. That aint much....
Seems like the "specialty" types might be a little more feasible.

over-regulation in the pacnw really pisses me off. pickin as a hobby has become illegal without the padding of unky sam's pockets. bunch of bullshit. growing is the way. go to the fairgrounds, the stables, the composters, get whatever you can for free, pasteurize, put in bags on ropes, grow oysters by the hundreds of pounds. this is what i'm thinkin lately. oysters, maitakes, and chicken-of-the-woods.
this thread shouldn't die.
peace.
