This mushroom was given to me by my Boss at my job, it was growing on the side of a tree was all the info she could give me. She found it in the woods in NW Florida, it is huge. It is as thick as my hand a clump of very large mushrooms. I am thinking/hoping that is Red Reishi. Killed some little bugs Beatles and centipedes coming out of it but not many. The smell is nothing special just kinda like smelling wet cardboard. Here are the pics.

Doesn't look shiny enough to be a reishi to me, but maybe it is just covered in spores or something. I would guess some other species of Ganoderma.

It's not Ganoderma. How about: Daedaleopsis confragosa ?

My first guess would be older specimens of meripilus giganteus, but it's just a wild guess.

Are any of these species poisonous? I was hoping for older Reishi, but if it is something else useful I will grind it up all the same. I found out that it was a Oak tree that it was growing on. Is there anything I can do to narrow down the species list. I could lick it and see if it taste like Reishi, Reishi has a pretty bad taste, I can't imagine to many mushrooms having that taste but maybe I am wrong. Any ideas?

Is it completely dry? From the pictures it looks a little too old to be of much use. In any case, it doesn't really look like Ganoderma lucidum... perhaps applanatum, but I wouldn't even be sure about labeling it a Ganoderma in the first place... Heck... it might even be shriveled up Laetiporus... who knows.
You could count the average number of pores per centimeter, note the shape of the pores as well... this would help narrow it down.
There are no dangerously poisonous polypores that I'm aware of... so you are free to conduct a double blind taste test... Invite all your friends!!!

It sort of resembles Phaeolus schweinitzii. A very large one though.

Color and general appearance seem to match a lot better with ph. schweinitzii than with m. giganteus.

I think I will have to agree with the Phaeolus schweinitzii. It resembles it perfectly. Thanks so much for the ID. It doesn't taste like Reishi and it crumbles to easily. Reishi when it is dry is like hard rubber. However Reishi is a Polypore like this mushroom, so I wonder how similar their herbal compounds are...?
If nothing else ritually I can see many uses of a very large and probably old organism that is parasite. However I would much rather supplement my Reishi supply if the essence is similar.

It might. I'm not aware of any poisonous polypores at all and i'm one to think they all have some sort of medicinal properties available. Some more than others.

So I prolly wouldn't go drinking it. lol
