jason, dont get me wrong here, tobacco is a wonderful thing in many many ways. but if your looking for some sort of recreational experience, this isnt "fun" the high that accompanies large but sub-lethal dosages of nicotine poisoning include spinning, anxiety, dizzyness, euphoria, vomitting, diarrhea, sometimes both of the previous at the same time, and rarely hallucinations, and can be worse feeling than a lot of really intense alcohol poisoning situations.
I once spent 6 hours laying in bed vomitting in a bag, no matter what I did my world was constantly spinning. This was after chewing on some freshly dried Rustica, and swallowing the juice. I have experienced similar but not as intense experiences from smoking.
Where a tobacco is from doesn't say anything about how potent its going to be when grown out of its natural habitat. So Tobacco from Peru might not do so well in Alaska. Also, tobaccum is tobaccum and generally has about the same alkaloid content. Tobaccum and rustica are both very potent when dried in the sun, and can lead to entheogenic experiences when smoked plain in relatively small doses.
All in all, any tobacco you grow is going to have a noticeable concentration of nicotine.

My interest in tobacco is not quite recreational. I'm a cigarette smoker and I'd prefer to eventually make my own blends of cigarettes than just go buy a pack of marlboros daily.. I'm still new to the ethno scene but I'm just trying to piece together what I may want to start looking into, because at the moment I just research random plants that interest me.

it would be easy to get a small crop going, even 20-30 plants is enough to supply you for a little while. You can either mix sundried tobacco in with some inert smooth smokable material to make cigs, or you could google up on curing tobacco and try a few of those methods to help bring down the nicotine content. your idea sounds like a possibility if you have the motivation.
next year im going to clear most of my garden plot and grow nearly 100 or more rustica straight from the ground. hopefully they will reach the 7ft mark I have plans and ambitions similar to yours, though im growing the tobacco for someone else.

i think only untreated N. tabacum wholesomely grown i guess. i read a long post on another forum about intent placed on tobacco and stuff that really said what i was thinking before i read it, and it was great tho i cant find a link to it. i highly doubt just N. tabcum from peru give that effect but im sure the key to it is intent of the growth, quality of soil, and (purity). i have to say mapacho that natives use that is tabacum is amazing and is as good if not better then Rustica. due to the fact that it does over power and makes you less sick. tho alot of people i have given it to refuse it cause it makes them sick and almost vomit. Il add anyone i have given strong stuff to has no problem with it and find it to just bring them to the state.
one thing to note if you a regular Cig smoker this stuff i have will rip you apart and make you feel more shitty.
for me it doesnt cause sickness, lung problems,or with draw.
american sprirt cigs are nothing compared to these and dont give the effect. im assuming mine gets its effect due to all the natives in the area that use it or something like that. their energy its hard to say exactly but one thing can be forsure it works to induce a strong trance if you can get over how harsh the smoke is and nausa your first times. also it can be eaten or added to huasca to improve effects of your brew
