Thoughts on High Mountain Compost??
    #7317626 -

I'm looking to make a few casings really soon, but I really need to find some poo. I went to the sponsers site the other day and I came across the website for High Mountain Compost. This stuff seems pretty good according to their site. However I was wondering if this compost was really worth it, it is pretty expensive including shipping for me it was around 55 bucks for 10 lbs. Your thoughts... let me know guys, thanks!

The $20 for shipping is unavoidable, shipping rates are shipping rates. If you really want to see horrible rates on shipping, try to get an empty barrel shipped to you. They charge you for 30 lbs. when it only ways 3 lbs. Assholes. I digress.

As for the worthiness of the product. I will say that nothing beats truly well made compost for mushrooms. The problem is that most compost that is available from gardening stores is _too_ composted.

Compost is made when bacterial and fungal microbes digest and decompose organic matter. This process turns kitchen and yard waste into rich, dark humus which is great for your garden. Unfortunately by the time this process is done, there's nothing left for our mushrooms to eat.

Compost designed for mushrooms is "half composted" making it more readily available for our mushies to devour, but not so much that there's nothing left to eat. Much the same way rennin is used to pre-digest cheese to produce "processed cheese"...rennin by the way is extracted from the lining of the fourth stomach of a cow.

Rennin-Free processed cheese is processed using A. Niger (black mold) of all things. Still I digress...

Bottom line:

Compost == Good, if you've made it yourself or trust the source that made it for you to be specifically targeting mushroom cultivation. Whether you have a month or two to do it yourself or you want to pay a premium for the convenience charge is up to you...

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.
