Thanks for the vote of appreciation, but it would be nicer to thank the ego behind the message. Do you think [s]he will be able to emerge again without the help of 'all the King's horses, and all the King's men?"

From about 6 months after birth, when we discover that biting our blanket doesn't hurt, while biting our thumb does hurt, we begin to develop an ego. This 'body-ego' comes first, and then during the 'terrible twos,' we discover the word "NO!" This is the rudimentary 'mental-ego' emerging. At adolescence, the first mission in human development is 'Identity,' "Who am I?" This question doesn't mean the same thing to teens as it does to followers of the great Yogi Ramana Maharishi who asked this question in Hindi ("Vichara Atma?"), and wanted to Know Who we were Ultimately. Uh uh.
For adolescents the 'social ego' and 'mental ego' reach incredibly inflated proportions. Reputation. Smart-assed replies to dull-minded adults. Clothes. Piercings. Haircuts. Hot rims. Hotter hotties. Who can be the first to reveal the hypocrasy of grownups? Please don't believe that young people don't have egos. What they don't have or want, is the opposite - humility - unless a mind-blowing trip shows them how much Awareness and energy is available to them when their loud and demanding egos are squashed down to size.

That's so true
It's a far gone lullaby, sung many years ago. Mama, mama many worlds I've come since I first left home.

You are an educated man, and I do agree that some of the teenagers got a little bit defensive on your advice.. although I do feel making mistakes and testing your boundaries is a vital part of growing up and becoming mentally sucessful in life. I can see how you are around the bad apples, rather than the 17 year olds like me(Yes, I AM egotistical . I can't speak for the misguided teens who have troubles with drug addiction and various other problems.. I believe they are weak of the mind, the reason? Part of it is probably there dim witted parents. My parents are more open and thoughtful of child raising.. instead of censorship and trying to ban me from experiencing life they try to get me to live my life being knowledgeable and informed.. In fact I have often gotten intoxicated on both alcohol and Mary with my parents, we don't see it as much of a problem because we are both comfortable with the drug and the situation.. in many ways it brings us closer together. Instead of having the authority figure/delinquient relationship we are friends, from there they can offer me advice and I'll listen. Kids are going to go through hardship and the best and only remedy is supplying them with a good base, and to form them into emotionally able beings when they are young so that they can tackle the issues when they arise and somewhat avoid other more difficult situations such as addiction. The other teenagers should perhaps avoid drug use, although they won't and doing so quite possibly won't make them any happier in the long run. Ever notice after people go through addiction and come out of it they appear reborn and have a new zest for life? Lifes valuable lessions are tough ones to learn.. but you gotta learn them somewhere.. somehow.. and reading it from a book or hearing it from one of the thousands of adults such as yourself ain't gonna cut it for most of us. If I were to take everybodies advice, when I'm looking back from your age all I will see is how I never experienced life and lived.. and that my friend is my greatest fear. I'm no expert though.. just an observant teenager.

I used to work in outpatient and residential drug treatment centers. Unfortunately, less than 1% of the population stays clean. That born-again trip is usually little more than a temporary emotional high received in a group counseling situation day after day. A couple days or a week after leaving treatment, the emotions dissipate and the emptiness and meaninglessness is back.
A lot of drug use, and I mean a LOT of it, is a secondary diagnosis. Lots of kids are 'dual diagnosis' cases, meaning that the drug abuse is a self-medication for thought disorders or personality disorders. Talk from any therapist isn't gonna make an impact on a person with beginning schizophenia, schizotypal, or schizoaffective disorders. Neither is talk gonna affect borderline, narcissistic, obsessive compulsive, antisocial or other personality disorders. Those kids who have intact personality structures, and who are experiencing the existential illnesses like boredom, loneliness, meaninglessness, shame, guilt, or anxiety, can and do listen. Those kids with usual emotional obstacles or social ineptness, who learn to use drugs to take the place of dating or general socializing also listen.
As in medicine, only the most resistant and deadly diseases are beyond intervention. All disease is not incurable cancer, and all mental dis-ease is not psychosis. Unlike kids, I don't even try to get on the same page with the most difficult of people, or the 'lowest common denominator' because on the 'hierarchy of needs,' I'm past the urgent need to 'belong,' developmentally. It's a stage one can't skip. One can try to be aloof and think that's cool, but you can't fool Mother Nature. I have been told, "You saved my life," or "you changed my life forever," so I never know. I've also lost kids to overdose deaths because nobody was gonna tell them anything. OK, so they died. I'm not going to allow myself to become inflated by the successes or depressed by the failures. I Know that I'm acting from the right place. As the Good Book says, 'Let those with ears, hear.'

30 here First post so far. I've mostly been reading the teks and stuff because I'm in the middle of my first attempt at growing shrooms. YEAH!!! Anyway I FIst did LSD in 87-88, And for the next 4-5 years following we were tripping all the time. I certainly did not regard it in any spiritual sense at that time. I just love trying to play chess on a marble chess set while it melted, or the way we would kick ass at playing turbo quarters at the parties because everyone else actualy was getting drung from all the vodka we were drinking. And seeing the grass actuly grow, the concerts. One of my favorites was comunicating via inuendo with my fellow psyconauts and the others not having a clue as to what we were saying. My best friend and I got to where we could communicate with little or no words. I loved that. Of course over time we came to respect the profondness of our experiences. Intense discussions with a friend or time alone for intrespection all lead to a sort of cosmic awareness. I am not a religious person but I don't think I would be the spiritual person I am today without those experiences, not that I'm all that spiritual aside from a many paths yin/yang sort of mindset. basicly.... .... Pretend I said all kinds of stuff about mental age vs physical and maturity of a person (teen) being the more inportant factor. It all depends on the person. Anyway shrooms have always been a part of the mix since my first trip and I tried and done all kinds of stuff. I was lucky enough to get some liquid LSD from a new friend a cople of weeks ago and after about 8 years it way a very pleasant experiance. (I strongly suggest Shpongle) and I hope to get my fist flush of B+ in a couple of weeks. My only advice would be to practice moderation in all thigs (exept living). To much of anything is bad wether it be books, drugs, religion, or work. Nice to meet you all. mntlfngrs
