Recommend some good general knowledge books/sources
    #7313795 - 08/20/07 10:24 AM (16 years, 7 months ago)

So I was watching movie they made for Count of Monte Cristo, and I was intrigued by the abbey's explanation for his vast amounts of knowledge.
The abbey explains that he has learned all that he knows through books, and continues to list of some of the books he has read to educate himself:

"I could recite you the whole of Thucydides, Xenophon, Plutarch, Titus Livius, Tacitus, Strada, Jornandes, Dante, Montaigne, Shakespeare, Spinoza, Machiavelli, and Bossuet. I name only the most important."
-The abbey

What are some books/sources you recommend to autodidact one's self in the ways of the world.

I'm talking about anything, from books to learn the basics of plants, to books about making the necessities of life with common items in nature.

educate! :hippie:

Farmer in the Sky, by Robert Heinlein. Great introduction to soil science and agronomy.

Asimov's Foundation series is awesome!

Some good books:
The Dragons of Eden, or anything else by Carl Sagan
Vimy by Pierre Berton
The Fabric of the Cosmos by Brian Green
Sync by Steven Strogatz
Collapse by Jared Diamond
On Intelligence by Jeff Dawkins

Haven't read that- but his Guns, Germs and Steel should be on the required-reading list.
