incubation overheat!?
    #731192 - 07/08/02 11:46 AM (15 years, 23 days ago)

just incubated 11 jars of equadorians that my buddy had a syringe full of, after having them sit in his room and not doing anything with , had given the spores to me. i threw them in the incubation chamber about a week and a half ago. at one point the temp in there got to 97 F,while i was away , and although there is some signs of growth, most o fthe jars arent doin much. im thinkin i overheated them, but also pondering the syringe sitting in my friends room. what do ya think? any ideas as to why not much growth? thnx

Yes, you over heated them, but it didn't kill the spores. If you have noticed slow progress of the mycelium this is because they will acutally start to colonize slower when the temperature gets higher than 86degrees.

so the jars with no growth will eventually grow ? ive always incubated around 90F to speed up mycellium growth. your tellin me this actually slows it up ???

Yeah, there are actually studies (I think Stamets did one, but I don't have TMC on-hand) that show how when you overheat mycelium the growth rate actually slows much more dramatically than if you were to underheat them. Temps higher than 86 degrees also (according, again, to Stamets) tends to favor contams over your mycelium.

Yes, they should, but I cant guarentee it. Recently my jars were taking 5-7 days to show germination from fresh spores so I had the idea that the rising temperature in the Northern Hemisphere was overheating my incubator and slowing growth. Indeed, I was correct, it was about 93 degrees so I dropped it down to 82 and the growth exploded like all the times before.
