Stereoscopic 3D glasses for gaming.

I stumbled across a retailer selling 3d glasses for use in gaming that seem to be very positively reviewed (albeit back in 2002).
The lenses of these glasses act as shutters, while the software alternates the frames rendered between a left and right eye view. While the right eye view is onscreen, the "shutter" on the left eye is closed, and vice-versa, many times per second.
The technology sounds quite solid, and apparently the process has a negligible impact on performance... but it sounds a bit like a gimmick and I wanted to see if anyone here has an educated opinion about this sort of thing (or perhaps can recommend a more modern alternative).
The ones I saw were made by eDimensional.

I had a 3d system for movies and whatnot that uses shutters. Its not too bad, but its not to great either. You can see the shutter, little things throw it off too. Having lights on can mess with the effects.

that doesn't sound like it would work very well unless built into the game from the outset.

no, technically if it just shutters, anything thats moving or animated and has depth with shading is 3d. Its kinda like stereoscopic pictures, the difference in the two pictures is just a small degree based on slight variations.

I've used them, they work as advertised, the 3D effect is pretty good and they should be compatible with any Direct3D software. But once the novelty wears off, I personally wouldn't wear a bulky headpiece every time I wanted to play a game. For under $40 I might get them just for fun, but I wouldn't blow a lot of cash. It's one of those things like a fancy joystick or steering wheel, the concept sounds cool but at the end of the day you're still playing the same old games.

they cost about $70 before shipping... might be worth it.
I wear big noise-cancelling headphones all the time, and I often wear glasses... it's not much of a stretch to add 3d glasses to it, especially since these ones are only marginally more bulky than the glasses Drew Carey wears

We used to use something like them back when I was working with GIS. There is a "switch" you can flip in OpenGL to render for shutter glasses like these. Any OpenGL application, in theory, can work with these. (In theory because most programs don't give you an option to enable the effect even though it is built into the system.)

they claim the glasses are compatible with nearly all games, and the glasses come with drivers. I assume the glasses' drivers are responsible for telling the engine to flip the view back and forth.
