What's the benefit of Peat/Verm Vs. Verm/Coir casings?

Me again here buggin' the experts!
As colinization continues, I am preparing my knowledge and supplies for casing.
Previously, I've only cased once (with great success), using the Verm/Coir casing. The only problem I found with it was when I harvested, it was hard to remove the verm bits from the fruit.
Reading the 50/50 Peat/Verm casing tek, it seemed to allude that peat helps in the harvesting portion, making fruit picking easier. Is that really the case?
I am asking because I have a feeling that I will have issues finding Hydrated Lime and Crushed Oyster Shell. Unless it's very common at feed stores. So unless 50/50 offers a big enough advantage, I think I will stick to the Coir/Verm tek.
Also, I don't have a pH meter, and some of the posts on here seemed to say regulating pH using strips is innacuratey.
Plus I already have everything for the Verm/Coir casing, so it would also prevent me from spending more money.
I think my other issue with my previous casing was that my tray was too large, so fruit were plentiful, but had a lot of aborts and small fruit. This time around I will find an appropriate container.

coir has nutes, nutes are no good on casing layer.

You should be able to find lime at a garden supply store. I've had good luck with MGMC, look around for it. (I know you have supply issues, though)

I think the major concern with coir/verm is that it tends to over colonize and overlay easily. you prevent this with peat/verm, but you need to adjust the ph. you don't need a meter or ph strips. there are tried and true ratios that will put you in the right range. go to ace hardware for your lime. they are sure to have it and if not will order it in for you

Peat + verm- IMO this is the best mix. You get the fluffiness of the peat with the water retention of the verm. Only downside, and it's not a big one, is the semi need for calcium carbonate to balance the PH of the peat since it's acidic. However if you're only in it for a flush or two you can ignore that (i do, and i get great harvests from a 5lb casing).
Verm- Verm will do in a pinch if for some reason peat isn't available. It provides great water retention and no other additives to balance out the PH. The only problem is that it tends to compact which is counterproductive in cultivation. When working with straight verm i suggest going on the sparser side and create a thin layer.
Coir- IMO coir makes a better substrate then a casing layer. For one coir bricks are a bitch to deal with unless you hydrate the whole thing at once, because of the slight nutrient content they tend to overcolonize a bit quickly, and i don't think it works too well on its own and requires another additive like peat or verm to flesh it out and keep it airy and nice. However if you can't find peat or verm you can always find coir at a pet shop like petco.

Awesome, thanks for the tip guys. I will buy some Peat on the way home tonight, and also some hydrated lime.
Is there any particular ratio I should follow (link plz) since I won't have a pH meter/strips? I don't want to use the wrong one.

do a search for the ratio, it actually might be in the faq's we have here or some of the guides off of the main page.
Also, in addition to the hydrated lime you should pick up some crushed oyster shells, or oyster shell flour, lime is great for the short run in quickly reducing the PH. However if you want to keep the casing around the oyster shells provide a nice long term buffer.

go to home depot, lowes, or walmart, hit up the garden center and ask.

The only difference I like peat/verm casings better is it's less nutritious and I find it easier to see field capacity with peat.

if you have a hard time finding oyster shell flower use gypsum. you really should keep a supply of gypsum anyways since it's a great additive to grain spawn, substrate, and casing layer
