i use filter discs every time without the metal lid....just metal band and a filter...as long as your incubator will hold the moisture within it your jars will be ok....i have never had a single jar dry out...and i rarely lose a jar anymore...i wipe down my filter discs with alcohol after i remove them from pressure cooker and take off foil.then i put in a clean container until cooled and ready to br juiced....then i rub down before innoculation and just tape over my innoc. holes...throw in incubator and give it 2 weeks....be sure to use a vermiculite layer on top too....good luck...MMFD are the shit.....

You can also drill 2 ............1/4 inch holes in a metal lid & place the filter under it, then use the metal lid ring & screw it down. Use one hole for innoc & tape it over.

no the alcchol wont hurt the discs....i have never tried to reuse old discs...i wouldnt want to use them again with two holes already in them ya know....just be clean and things should be just fine....i use alot of lysol and alcohol and i rarely lose a jar...i would innoculate the jars with a friend around so he can tape the holes while your innoculating cause the hot needle melts the discs a little and you want to tape the holes as quick as possible...and he can take them off the rack and put them in a clean incubator....good luck man.....

i am using regular coffee filters . my jars are almost fully colonized after 10 days. they should be done in 3 days. no contams and the filters were super cheap. i used 2 on every jar.

Use the metal lids til they get rusty and nasty looking. Then go buy some plastic lids.
I use tyvek instead of filter discs now......I like the price better. Plus I don't have to buy the filter discs from an asshole anymore!

I like the disks from myco supply MUCH better than the micron magic ones. They are truely a better filter. They are moredurable, they don't wick water into your substrate, they are fitted to widemouth and regular mouth sizes, and they are thick and seem inpenetrable The only prob is they are like $16 for 10! MUCH MUCH better than the 100 for $15. They are easier to reuse, too. I use the metal lids to hold the Micron Magick disks down and I get contam somtimes on the top of the filter disk that grows through th filter! That is not much of a filter in my opinion. Plus you have to cut them and if you follow his tek on his web page you put foil on the top as the last step . i bought disks so I wouldn't have to use foil and maximize air exchange. In his defense he does instruct to loosely put the foil on , but still. Roadkill, what is Tyvek?

Tyvek is a vapor barrier material.
Anno was the first person that I saw on the site to bring this up.
Its used inbetween walls on buildings and houses. You can buy it at Home Depot and building supply stores. Pretty cheap this way.
The US postal service uses it for their Express Envelopes. It says Tyvek right on the envelope. But....I'll warn you that it might be a crime to use these free envelopes other than to use them for Express mail. You can make 6....6" filter disks from one envelope.
Safety and Supply stores have these white suits made out of Tyvek. These suits are used for Asbestos removal and such. Only about $2.00 for a whole suit.
How I make my Tyvek filter disks: I bought a 6" round protractor...1 perm marker....and a pair of sharp scissors. I lay the protractor down on top of the Tyvek. Draw around the protractor with a perm marker. Then cut out the circle.

FedEx envelopes are made of the same material. I suppose it wouldn't be a federal crime to misuse these!

It's not the same stuff, but it does work similarly. Tyvek allows for air exchange, but the pores are too small for contaminants to pass through.

so far i haven't had good luck with filters... i tryed them with the brf/verm half pints .... dry them up and 8 out of 8 pr's got the cobweb ...( may be the provider of the syringe fault for a bad syringe making the pr's get cobweb ) i tryed them with rye .... with gt's and hawain pesh ... got the green funk after three to five days ... maybe due to shaking it to get the wet rye apart and the filter got soaked by the rye and rye juice i'll just have to try try again .... i got like fifty more mircon filters for free ... Just wondering if it's ok to use them with birdseed in quart jars ???

Very risky to use coffee filters. Find a local FedEx location and try the Tyvek envelopes.

Just cut out a circle that's larger in diameter than the mouth of the jar. Lay the circle on the mouth of the jar and screw the ring on.

You dont't use Tyvek for the PF Tek. Try reading the FAQ for more information concerning the PF style of cultivation.

It's not for the pf tek....per say. It's for quart jars of Rye and birdseed.
I wouldn't waste a filter on the PF tek.....or a cake.

I think enough information concerning filter disks has been shared. We aren't going to tolerate this kind of rudeness in the forum. I'm closing this one.
