Bruising from heat? Contam? Big deal or no?
    #7294034 - 08/14/07 01:48 PM (16 years, 7 months ago)

Hey all :]
I've been letting my 3 puerto rican cakes pin for the last 1-2 weeks. About 5 days ago though, one cakes started to show a slight blue hue...then this got more noticeable while occurring on the other cakes as well. I've done a lot of reading and using the search button on here, but every post has some different conclusion... and is especially hard to tell if i have the same problem cause most of them have no photos. Other then that though, they are looking pretty good (if the blue isn't some contam)

I'm guessing it is from the heat, my FC has a 99% humidity reading and a 78 Degree F. reading on the Hygrometer.... and from what I've read, 71-73 is good. So blue is from heat probably, yes?

If I could get some feedback on what all you prime mycologists think I would greatly appreciate it and will hit you back with a rating for the help =D

Here are pics of the 3 cakes.

Thanks guys!

although some look like you've misted on them and the myc is bruised, some picks show patches of what may be mold.

if i dipped a Q-tip in some h202 and dabbed it on the more 'mold' looking areas, and nothing happens... would be more likely that it is bruising? There wasnt really any reaction either when i just barely did that...so maybe its all just mycelium

I think the molds starts to smell in contact with h2o2

I think bruising is actually quite common on cakes, I had at least a little on most of mine.

Too much humidity...not enough Air.

Fan those suckers. IME when the mycelium starts reaching off the cake like that you need to cut back on RH and increase the FAE.

ah nuts i guess i've got to fan a lot more then, and try and keep the humidity still above 90. Thanks a lot everyone for the input!

Some strains bruise more than others. The usual cause is getting dry. Keep the humidity as high in the 90's as you can, while providing plenty of air exchange and they should pin soon.

Your cakes are not dry, In all due respect I don't think RR looked very close.
Those cakes need some fresh air.

Alright cool thanks guys its really helpin me out.

yeah definitely am giving them lots more air now, anyone know if its safe to leave one of those computer fans inside a fc? or will the amount of humidity damage it?

i been fanning them at LEAST 2 times a day with a piece of card board (lid is to big) and then using the little computer fan to blow the air from the bottom out (the thing is i haven't left it in there all day yet to see what happens once turned on...it would be nice if it continues to work cause then i can put it on a timer....)

I FIXED the heat problem though, i just went and froze a 1 gallon jug of water, then placed it on top of the fc with the computer fan about an inch away from the jug, sucking air from the jugs direction and blowing it away from the jug...it took the temp down to 73.6 degrees...perfect.

i have never had a cake bruise because of fae..bruising = low humidity/misting
