Spraying cakes with water

Some teks say not to spray your cakes. Others say a light misting is beneficial. Anyone here tried both? Which works better?

I, personally, have never directly sprayed my cakes (seems like water would stand on the tops). Seems unnecessary if your rH is right. Now, if you were to do something like a double-ended casing (which I have done) then why, yes you can spray them, but direct the spray onto the casing and not the mycelium itself. I'd like to hear from someone who does spray directly on their cakes, how'd that work for ya? (at any rate, spraying would have to be minimal and very controlled to avoid water buildup/drippage on the cakes). Also, if your cakes are dy and you think they need to be sprayed, I'd consider dunking them.

Mist the terrarium, not directly in the cakes. Its just to get the moisture content up.
Spraying directly on them is not a good thing...

Thanks for replies. It seems no mater how hard you try, small droplets will find their way to your cakes. For this reason, very light misting seems to be okay. After all, why would dunking cakes be acceptable if direct contact with mycelial tissue is such a bad thing?

Standing water on the cakes is just asking for a contam. "As soon as the fungus cake comes out of the jar, daub the cake with a piece of loose tissue paper to soak up any water droplets that may have deposited on the cake as it comes out of the jar. " - from the PF site, I think this suggest the importance of keeping them dry, and making sure they are in the right RH, which for cakes is easily achieved with perlite.

Wouldn't dabbing your cakes with tissue be more likely to contaminate? I really question, having laboratory experience myself, some of the suggestions given in teks.

when you dunk a cake it's normally only because it is dry after flushing or dry after sitting in a (relatively) dry incubator (so it can drink fully b4 it fruits) in the matter of fruiting cakes, you don't want water directly touching them when they are trying to fruit, because this will lead to overlay. IMO the perilite humidity is best to keep them nice and moist without contamination or overlay.

Fully colonized cakes have never gotten contaminated In my experience. Your mileage may vary, but pretty much everywhere I read they say fully colonized they are pretty resistant against contams.

My terrarium is near 100%, and my cakes look "dry". The surface may be moist but wet with water that can be soaked up with a napkin or tissue. Whenever I mist, I make sure my cake is covered in water, even when its fruiting. I check in a few hours and it's back to that "dry" state again.

Ive also been spraying the cakes directly to saterate them and they always seem to soak it up ok.In fact the ones i havent sprayed are to dry and require dunking but the sprayed ones still hold a good weight.I use highland spring water and spray about once every 2 days and have no contams or bruised mycelium.I think you could over do it though but practice makes perfect.

If you take care not to spray the cakes directly, should you use a water/hydrogen peroxide mix to reduce contam?

1. DO spray the cakes directly. It doesn't hurt anything as long as you're not leaving standing water on them. 2. DON'T spray with h2o2/water solution. It'll only hinder growth. Once your cakes are fully colonized they're pretty good at fighting off contaminants by themselves.
