Leaving fully colonized jars for a week?
    #7297526 - 08/15/07 12:49 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Would some fully colonized jars be ok for a week while their owner was on vacation? Lets say bad timing, and underestimated quickness of the colonization process occurred and their owner had important plans; he/she needed to go away for a week. Would they be OK (not contaminated or damaged) when he/she returned to deal with them?

Curious. Sorry if this has been asked a million times. Thanks.

leaving it for a week after full colonization (according to posts ive read, not experience) will strengthen the mycelium = bigger shrooms.

You'll get some in vitro pinning, but I'm pretty sure that's a good thing. The actual Professor Fanaticus version of the PF Tek calls for leaving them in the jar for a week after you reach 100%. That way you get many more pins on your first flush. Colonized cakes are also supposed to be much more resistant to contamination than uncolonized ones. I think you'll be fine, but you should still wait for someone more experienced than me to verify.

I have a similar problem. My girlfriend is going on vacation for a week, starting tomorrow, and I don't want her to get a clue about my secret hobby. I have eight fully colonized jars, and I wanted to dunk them tonight, but I'm not sure if I should wait instead.

The fridge is not a safe place to hide something.

That depends what you're hiding it from. In this case, from contamination...
I mean if you are hiding it from "someone", maybe you shouldn't be growing in the first place?

Yup, you guys will be totally fine leaving them alone for a week. Just leave them where you have them right now or if you need to just transfer them to a place with a temperature thats about the same. If you come back a week from then to find them pinning, just pick the little guys off, dunk, roll, and fruit. As far as the grain jars go, you probably won't have any pins.

Time to find a new hobby, or a new girlfriend. I'd suggest the former, but that is your choice, after all.

As per the original topic, your cake/spawn jars will be fine, even unrefrigerated, for several weeks. You'll start to see yellowish metabolites build up after a while, but those just seem to be a reaction of the mycelium to a combination of a lack of growing space and insufficient conditions to start fruiting in vitro. It's not something to worry about.

I let mine go till pins start to pop invitro. That's when you know it's been colonizing for long enough.

Depending on what kind of jar your doing, they won't always do that. Especially with grain jars, there isn't always enough moisture for an in vitro grow, at least with many of mine. Some samples also seem to be genetically more or less likely to grow in vitro even under similar conditions.

I consider that a positive thing, since it means I can wait to spawn them until I actually want to, but to each their own.

Betcha it will.

I just spawned some two-month-old rye. It's taking off nicely. I don't even refrigerate anymore. I imagine the mycelium is used to this kind of thing--vegetative expansion, then wait, wait, wait, and fruit only when the time is right. That's pretty much the natural cycle, after all, lots of wait and then occasional fruiting.

Hey! My FOAF looked in on his BRF PF Jars on his lunch break. Two of the dozen were FULLY COLONIZED!!! So he did a happy dance and high-fived his coworkers. He's going to mark the date on them with tape, and wait (a little less than) a week before he births them. Then dunk & roll - into the PMP. When he comes back from a short beach trip, he will do the same to the other ten that are lagging behind by a couple days.

All I'm saying is that the day after I gave my advice, I was in a position to take that same advice, myself.

My apologies to ArcofaJourney for any threadnapping, if that's what ThePyschonaut52 is calling it.:)

It is now time for the weedsmoking to make it all better:stoned:
