no PC

has anyone ever tried growing with WBS without using a pressure cooker? i made 7 1/2 pint cakes and just put them in boiling water for an hour. 3 got contaminated but i put the other 4 in fruiting chambers a couple days ago and while they havent started pinning, they're still doing what they're supposed to so far. being a teenager and working at a fast food restaurant, i dont want to spend alot of money of a PC. id even settle for a 2/3 failure rate to save the money. what is that a PC can do that a regular pot cant? (except of course for the cooking under pressure thing)

That's pretty much it. It's a pot that puts the contents under pressure.

also great for roasts...
Pick one up at Walmart for like $45. Really not that expensive.

Pressure cooking is performed at a higher temperature than boiling. It is the pressure that allows this.

But, don't tell the man he screwed! A foaf's first time grow was done with a long boil. Find that tek!

thus, more thorough sterilising can be acheived.

With wbs and other grains, they contain lots of nasty endospores and things u really really do not want germinating and growing, thats why they are rinsed and soaked then pc - this should guarantee that everything is killed in the wbs.

May i suggest using verm/brf tek, this can be achieved without the use of a pressure cooker, but its still no guarantee, some people still have alot of failure without a pressure cooker.

Definitely invest in a PC.

boiling water under standard atmospheric pressures can only get to 212(F) degrees. Doesn't matter how fast it's boiling, it won't get hotter than that.

In a pressure cooker, when the pressure builds up to, say 15 lbs of pressure, the temperatures can reach up to 250(F).

The very center of almost all grains are contaminated with what are called "bacterial endospores" that simply boiling cannot kill...so we pressure cook them out to insure sterility.

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.

Heres is a pick of my latest grow.. no PC was used at any stage.  I do have a PC but decided to try tyndallization.  This involves heating the substrate 3 times over three days to allow all endo spores to germinate and be killed off by the steaming proccess.
These shrooms were produced using nothing but a microwave.  Whole wheat grains were used as spawn.

First Flush

Second flush comming now.

 Use common sense..read alot.. and keep on experimenting.
Watch out for the man.. dont do as he tells ya!

Hot damn funkey monkey. that is an impressive grow for a microwave sterilization.

I reccommend you write that TEK. you WILL be famous.

other than that, everyones said it already, you cant heat em enough without the pressure unless you do the tyndallization method but it has a high failure rating. You basically let the remaining endospores germinate after the first steam sterilization for 24 hours then steam sterilize again. do this process over 3 days and thats it.

If youre gonna do it, do it right the first time. Shit gets expensive, but a pressure cooker will pay for itself the first time you succeed. think about it...

A PC provides more reliable and consistent sterilization faster and easier than any other method. You can use Tyndallization, but it takes three days to do it right. PC takes an hour.
If you want to have success in mycology, a PC is a really good idea. Find a used one somewhere- I paid $9 for mine, you can find one too.
