Question about flash drives, and other hardware that stores files

Whenever I delete stuff or take out stuff from it, it still functions as though it were still there.
For example, I've been moving music files in my flash drive around all day, and though there are no items in there, it says it only has 312 kb worth of memory left

I would format the flash drive if there's (supposedly) nothing on it. That should clear it up.

In Windows XP, it's in my right click menu on both hard drives.
