Nicotiana rustica ??

I was just looking around erowid when I ran across tobacco. As a smoker this makes me wonder, what's the difference between rustica and tabacum? Which one is in cigarettes and why does bouncingbearbotanicals refer to rustica as 'sacred tobacco'?

The native americans would supposedly smoke it until they passed out, and would have profound visions.

I had some that was uncured and was very harsh. you could smoke a few puffs and get as much Nicotine as a full cig.
as far as large amounts I wouldn't try it because it has 10 times the Nicotine as regular tobacco and it will kill you.

yupp I grow and smoke it, its much much more potent than tobaccum. one hit of rustica to me is comparable to taking the biggest possible hit off a cigarette to where you have to sit down bc you're buzzing so much.

So you smoke it for that nicotine buzz? That's pretty sweet, just pack it in a pipe and take a couple rips.. Do you smoke butts too or does rustica do it for you now?

with dried but uncured rustica, even when harvested yellow, just sucking the smoke into your mouth (puffing, not inhailing) is enough to get you buzzing.

Yeah, it would be a lot healther because; 1. You're inhaling a lot less smoke, and 2. There's not as many horrible chemicals like the tobacco companies put in cigarettes.

From what I know, they always use tobaccum for cigarettes... since rustica is 10x more potent, a whole cigarette of it would make you pass out (at the least).

anyone know anything about curing rustica?
how do you get the most potent smoke? I've read that curing take away the harshness but isn't as potent as just letting the leaves air dry.
what are your methods?

I'm also interested in curing methods...
I want to make a smooth flavorful low nicotine rustica tobacco...
I really don't like the effects of nicotine overdose...but I like to smoke...
I'd go with tabacum, but rustica has a higher complexeity of other chemicals which add to it's effects...
Here's a method I have in mind for a very flavorful and mild rustica.
1)~Fresh Nicotiana spp. leaf is picked and placed on a cedar (or other hardwood) rack covered by a tarp/plastic and left to sweat for 7 days in the sun. 2)~After 7 days have passed the leafs are removed from the rack and steamed over boiling water for 7 minutes. 3)~Honey and Vanilla extract is added. 4)~After flavoring is added the leafs are hung next to a hardwood fire to be smoked for 7 hours. 5)~ When the smoking is complete remove veins and long cut the leaf then place it into an air-tight container to age for 7 days. 6)~ After the ageing is complete remove from container and sun dry for 7 more days 7)~ The Tobacco is now cured and ready to smoke.
Half of the cured tobacco will be mix with 1 part blue lotus and put into my cigarette machine, which rolls them and adds a filter.
The other half will be kept for my pipe.
I’ll call ‘em “Lucky Seven’s” or something....

that sounds like a great curing process. I was thinking of curing it so it's very potent, and mix in some mint, sinicuichi, klip dagga, and dwarf scullcap.
anyone else got any other methods?

I would say not mix it because the smoke is so overbearing. I would sweat cure it with no added flavors also. Rustica is a sacred tobacco It is very good for smudging to clean the area of negative entities\spirits.

I think that combo compliments each other very nicely as long as you don't use too much rustica, the heimia makes the smoke smoother and the mint makes it less harsh on your throat. the klip dagga, dwarf scullcap and rustica together make a really nice relaxing high.

I have grown rustica and have some that has been cured fo 3+ YEARS. Still harsh. I would also like to point out that one needs to be very cautious when harvesting it, as nicotine can be absorbed through the skin... I became very dizzy and nauitous after handling the fresh leaves. It should also be said that nicotine is HIGHLY toxic in very small amounts. One needs to be very careful with tobacco, unlike most entheogens tobacco can kill with NO remorse. N. rustica is an interesting plant teacher, but wear glove when you handle it. I gave some to my crazy neighbor and he tried making a "nicotine nasal spray/drops" He said it was a powerful stimulant on par with cocaine, but far more dangerous and addictive. I know this is an old thread but I felt it was important to bring up the dangers in handling this plant.

how did you cure it?
Try this...

As long as you don't OD, your not actually getting any toxic effects.
aka
In sub-lethal dosages, there is no toxic effect. You may hallucinate, you may puke and spin and faint. Your not going to be harmed other than purging. Tobacco is NOT TOXIC in Sub-lethal doses.
An overdose consisting of respiratory failure, coma, death etc is a dose high enough to cause Toxicity.
By all means, everything else you said was right on par, wear gloves and respect this plant. Right on
Just to clear that up.
