Ooops... steralized my spawn substrate
    #7287494 - 08/12/07 12:58 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I have a bunch of substrate that I whipped up (coffee/coir/cowpoo) and I cooked it in the oven at way too high temps for way too long. What can I do with it now? I really don't wanna toss it, but I REALLY don't wanna waste a jar or two on it if its just gonna contam.

Can I let it sit out for a day or two so it builds up some contams, then pasturize it normally?

that would be overcomplicating it, what you do need to determine, however, is if you hosed your moisture content...convection ovens suck the moisture out of everything.

WTF mycocurious? What are you talking about... He STERILIZED it instead of pasteurized it.

I over cook my substrates often and it has yet to be a problem.

But I have never over cooked it over boiling temp, its just not possible the way I do it, so I mean if his oven was 650 who knows what that could do to the sub.

I'm a huge fan of pasteurization but there's no reason to let it sit for a couple days and try to "gain" microbes. If he's heated the substrate over the temps in which the thermophilic microbes can survive, they're gone. They're not going to be replaced from sitting out in the air.

Nor is going to cause the sugars that have been broken down by the cooking process to reconvert themselves into the complex carbohydrates they once where.

At this point his biggest concern should be verifying his moisture content is still acceptable because of the cooking in the convection oven and be on his merry way...

The secret is to use a big pot and a candy meat thermometer to get it to 185 and then turn the stove off put the poo in a pillow case and set it in there put lid on and wait 45 minutes.

When the poo meats water even when very very dry it still cools it a bit so 185 then as it sits for 45 minutes it should never have gone under 150. But my pot is huge and I cook a whole lotta poo so it cools really slow.

Then wring the the poo out hard. And if your to much of a weakling to do that, cause large amounts of poo are hard to ring out, then you can get as much out that way as u can, then wear clean gloves thicker the better, and ring each handful out a bit to get the moisture content rite prior ti installing into the tray.

did you miss,or not open :smirk: the link i posted in your earlier thread.
works for bulk subs just as well...omit the hydrated lime.
here i'll save you the trouble of clicking

I like Roger Rabbits method of doing the 50/50 casing...

    Quote:
    Don't sterilize your casing material.
All you need to do is kill any trich or other fungi spores that are present.
That's why we only pasteurize casings.
You actually want a small amount of bacteria in your casing, as it helps to promote a better flush.
I would recommend pasteurizing in quart jars.

It's very easy to use your PC to pasteurize in quart jars.
Load your field capacity casing material or compost/manure into quart jars and place in the PC.
Fill with COLD water 1/2 to 2/3 of the way up the jars.
Place the jars in your PC or other large covered pot with COLD water
Cover and turn on the stove. Do not place the weight on your pc. Leave the vent open.
Allow the water to come to a boil where you can feel steam escaping from the vent hole.
Allow steam to escape for five minutes, but no longer.
Shut off the stove and leave the PC alone for 1/2 an hour.
Then repeat the process...bring it back up to a boil.
Allow steam to escape for five minutes, but no longer.
Shut off the stove and leave the PC alone for 2 hours.
At that time, you can remove the jars and they'll be just right.
I've used this tek for years, and the interior of the jars will reach 150F for an hour, but never exceed 170F.

When you are measuring out your peat...for every cup of peat add 1 teaspoon of lime and 1 tablespoon of gypsum.
Keep it dry til you are done mixing it all up....dry mix it!~
Then add the water to the peat, gypsum and lime.
After that let it sit for an hour or so.
    Then test the ph.
It should be right on ph wise.
Then add your verm into the mix...after doing the above.
1 cup of verm for every cup of peat that you used.

It doesnt matter wether the mix as proper moisture content still. A sterilized asing layer should be disguarded unless you are cultivating contams.

lol, I've been cornered into arguing a position I don't support. I've always only ever pasteurized...but I was attempting to sound advice based on the assumption that he wasn't inclined to toss his casing material.

That being said PF and HippieChick as well as others advocate sterilization of casing layers exclusively and they've had their own repeatable success.

I prefer pasteurization over sterilization but in this case, I'd say he'd be fine using it as is, with the aforementioned caveats.

Im not trying to "corner" your into arguing. But it just makes sence (to me) that with 62 posts this is probally NStoneys 2nd or 1st grow. I wouldnt compair HippieChicks results with that of a noobs. HippieChick is the ONLY person Ive read posts about that like to sterilize their casing mix. While this may work for her why would you risk all your work thus far trying something thats known to contam, and when it does.. maybe it wont be until your 2nd flush... but when it does then youve wasted all the time colonizing your jars and what not to just start over. When on the other hand... while you have good spawn use it right

Well this is in fact my 2ish 3ish grow (couldn't really tell you for sure cuz Im always spawning, atleast to more jars, so (in theory) I constantly have somthing ready to fruit.... kinda like sea of green (fungi version) i guess.

Anyways... I've been having problems with my spawns/casings; steralized, pasturized, untouched... basically all of them!

Since I don't wanna waste this substrate I decided to delegate this stuff to experiment duty. Right now its sitting out next to a container of untouched substrate and pasturized substrate and I'm gonna see which contams first and most easily. I'm also doing this with various casing materials. Hopefully this experiment will give me an idea what the most contam resistant substrate/casing material combo is. In theory I allready know that *properly* Pasturized Coir/Coffee/Cowpoo substrate cased with pasturized jiffymix or 50/50 will probably be the most contam resistant combo for me, but I need to learn the hard way i guess.

BTW, yea I'm a noob and this is my 2nd-3rd grow, but I cloned the nicest specimen from my first grow to agar, i've done a couple G2G's, a sucessful malt extract LC, so I like to think of myself as not the typical noob.

He didn't say casing layer. It's a substrate, and while pasteurization is best, sterilization won't ruin a substrate the way it will ruin a casing. Make sure the moisture content is right before you spawn to it.
