Hey Nightcap, the sales thing at wal-mart was an idiot, I have bought Penningtons Finch seed at 5 different Walmarts. Just check another walmart or ask to speak to the manager. They can and will "special order" it for you. Best of luck.

As for the substrate, I have recently started using just Finch seed and vermiculite. It works very well and is about as simple as it gets. Steep (soak in warm water) the seed for about a day, mix in the verm (so it will also become wet and possible pick up some of the nutrients in the water) and then I strain off the excess water. To do this, I simply dump the steeping mix into a colander and as soon as the bulk of the water runs through, I dump into quart jars. (I know, I know, don't use quart jars)I usually use about 3 cups seed/verm mix per jar. This leaves enough room to shake up and spread the mycelium around. Then P. cook for 1 1/2 hrs at 15psi to sterilize. Inject mycelial solution and after about 10 days, shaking every 2-3 days. I shake one final time and them case as per Ryche's 50/50+ Tek. Hope this helps.

hey thx guys for taking the time to answer my ?'s. Just in case you don't know. I've heard that sunflowerseeds contain some sort of toxin, that releases just before it opens the tap root. As to keep other plants coming around. Well thx again

Yea. I think thats the little warm that buries it self in the seed , and eats all the good stuff (nutrients) then die's,... in side the there....just kidding. Hey I have a ? for you. I came up with an idea( well my and a friend), but i'm taking the credit, since it was most of mine. You think coffee grounds and eggcorns would be a good substrate. I used to grow cannabis for 6 yrs. (but stopped now, since I found out it was illegal, I don't want to break any local or fed. laws), I used to use this mix with soil as well. It has a very rich nutrient content. I'm not sure if this is what shrooms need but, but if it's Nitro. then I know from personal exper. this is great. So you think this can be doctored up? thx

I don't know if maybe Ryche buys some birdseed that has particularly crappy sunflower seeds, but I generally don't have this problem with them. They are *great* nutrition for your mycelia. Workman's opinion is that the sunflower seeds merely *show* the contamination first, and I have to concur after my experiences. Maybe this is because of coloration (contaminants stand out better on a black substrate) or maybe because the contamination that is already there throughout the jar takes hold most abundantly there first.

I used to spend a lot of time straining sunflower seeds out of my bird seed, but I no longer even fuck with it, and find that, if anything, the jars with MORE sunflower seeds tend to be healthier and more robust.

I think any problems with sunflower seeds is strictly due to their structure. I think that since the seed is encapsulated in a much thicker harder shell, they need more sterilization time.
makes since to me.
BTW Ryche how did you figure out accorns from "egg corns"?

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

Just throwing in my data; Never had sunflower seed problems, 10-15 PSI/1 hour.
Can't imagine filtering the damn things out--much easier to ignore.
Oh, and I've been using the absolute cheapest BS I can find. Those big 25 lb-ers

That's what I use with no problems.
