I disagree. I think people need desire.

Your logic seems reasonable, but if you really think about it...a life without wants probably wouldn't be so good. Without any desire at all I mean. Theoretically, life would be perfect. You would have all you need for fulfillment and there would be nothing to stand in the way of happiness. But, perfection can only be good for so long. After a while, it would become routine. Monotonous. Constant perfection would be like hearing the most beautiful song in the world over and over again, or eating your favorite food every day for the rest of your life. Nothing would have meaning, because there would be nothing wrong to give that happiness meaning. Without bad, there can't be good for too long.

I'm not sure if that makes sense or not.


And as far as just sex...Isn't the fact that it feels good enough? Why do you need another reason to justify doing it? Sure, it complicates things sometimes, but it doesn't have to. It's a good thing. I doubt you'll ever stop wanting it. It's instinct. Sex is hardwired into your brain. Your body will continue to tell you to do it because it wants you to reproduce. Everything your body tells you is based on survival. Wanting food, water, sex. It's all the same. Your body wants you to live and reproduce. It won't stop telling you to. Why not just give in and do what feels good?

Interesting thread. I've enjoyed reading everyone's perspectives on this.

I have been pondering the ideas of the original poster for the past 6 months, quite alot.

I will agree with alot of the people who have responded. Sex is hardwired.

I want to give up sexual desire for many reasons.

I have found it impossible to do + i have tried many many times in the past while.

The only way for me would be to "go high up on the mountain and live in solitude" and focus on meditation. Even then i doubt wether i could totally eliminated sexual desire - perhaps i could direct my thoughts away from sexual desire, but the instant something provoked a sexual thought, i would be back where i started.

Sexual desire is intrinsic and undefeatable, at least for this young man living in the modern world.

I think my desire for abstinence is a manifestation of my desire to gain control in my life. It is a symbol of self control in my psyche.

If i can control my sexual urges - then i can control my spending habits, my routine, my discipline. If i can control my thoughts i will be a better person.

That is my line of thinking + it is faulty in some respects.

We do not need to be in control all the time - we need to be aware and make conscious decisions with good judgement at all times, but it is important to be indulge in the moments of spontaneity and pleasure too.

Suffering with nothing (maintaining discipline even though it is unpleasant) + having no desire is not the key to happiness - is what i am beginning to believe.

i believe any longing for anything is ego related. Sex is a natural act and if you feel it, then let it happen. But anything that creates inner conflict, such as desire for something you dont have and want takes away from being in the present moment.

If you are feeling having sex, do it and enjoy it. if you dont want to have sex, don't do it and enjoy not doing it. dont create inner conflict because your mind thinks it should or shouldn't be doing something, it is self defeating

yu just gotta prioritise and put things in perspective
if u think sex is in the way and
a path of abstinence will set you free
then its a flawed approach
sexuality is an energy, thats projected in
language and reaction
if ur desire is to rid urself of desire
then maybe whats getting in the way
is all but just a thought

As stated, It is Hardwired.  If it's any consolation to you, The "Drive" and "Desire" diminishes as you get older.  As you get older, PRIORITIES shift.  You'll find that there aren't enough hours in the day to get it all done.  Then when the day is done, you are genuinely tired.  Naked women laying in your bed wanting sex might all of a sudden seem like a "Burden".  Sex will be "On your day off" all of a sudden.  Sometimes weeks may pass between that familiar desire. I will say this....  The sex you have after the time elapsed is AMAZING.  New meaning to Passion and intensity.  This usually happens when you see the age of 35+

I have to agree with that.  People give up everything in pursuit of love and sex.  The majority of people are completely ruled by it.  I've seen people I know ditch all their friends for a girl.  Give them all their money.  Threaten to kill themselves when they split up.  Miss out on lifes adventures just to stay in one place with a partner.  Many of them have had children they regret having now they've realized they can't have much of a life now it has to be devoted the child they made just for some unprotected sex.  Its not something I will do with my life.

I was under the impression that to obtain true enlightenment one had to shed the body and mind of all worldly desires.  There are few people in history if any that truly have done this.  But through meditation, prayer, fasting, and chanting(basically move to Tibet and become a Monk)one is able to channel strong DMT like hallucinations and stay in altered planes for extended periods of time just to name the coolest reason for giving up all physical desires. Kundalindi Yoga Probably spelled wrong is the process of awakening the mind and body through meditation to obtain alter consciousness. 

My question to you is what are you looking to obtain from being abstinent?  Are you just thinking that if you give up sex you will be a happier person because the drive to reproduce would not be there so you would spend more time being productive in your daily live instead of chasing tail?

Procreation is an animal instinct not a true purpose.  We have enough intelligence to override animal instincts and many people do, choosing to be celibate or at least control when they have sex instead of caving in at the point of desire.

The only meaningful purpose for the individual is to do as you wish with life.  If for you that is to have sex, love or a family that is fine.  I prefer to abstain from sex for the most part as I find I have more energy, creativity and passion for life.  I suppose as with most things in life a healthy balance is the best option.
