I got my hands on a couple of wide mouth two quart jars. I am using ground up long grain brown rice and vermiculite for substrate. My question is, how long do you think these jars should by pressure cooked? I figure it would be longer but not sure how long......if I pressure cook for twenty minutes with one pint jars, maybe I should pressure cook these for fourty minutes. What do you think. Thanks.

The time for pressure cooking remains the same for all sizes of jars. Back when I was doing BRF/verm I pressure cooked the jars for 45 minutes. Hope this helps.

I guess I haven't been pressure cooking long enough. Although I haven't had a lot of problems with contams I will start cooking for a full 45 minutes. Thanks.

2 quart?!? I may be mistaken but that will take like 1 year to colonize, just get some 1/2 pint jars, they dont have to be widemouth just not tapered(not smaller at the opening).

I've been using the little half pint jars from the local walmart. A friend of mine remembered where he had a couple two quart widemouth jars so he gave them to me. You're probably right about the colonizing time, that would leave a lot of time for contams to envade. Has anyone else around here used two quart jars or some other large amount of substrate, how did it turn out?

Rye or millet is the way to go w/2 quart jars. Soak over night, rinse well, drain well(WELL), load jars 5/8ths to 3/4 full, use a filter disk, PC @ 15 pounds for 45 to 90 minutes, shake jar while still hot to break up any clumps & after they cool to room temp, innoc with a good quick viable strain. Store in the dark @ around 80 -- 85 F, after 10% coloniziation -- shake once to spread the myc around. Shake again @ 50% (if you want) & be patient. Six Tango

I'm going to have to get some rye then. I've been using the long grain brown rice because it is the easiest to find around here. I think I would rather just buy rye and not have to wait as long. Thanks.

If you have any trouble finding rye. All big grocery & pet stores have millet type wild bird seed (BS) in big bags cheap. Once you get rye or BS going, you will use more than you think & more often. SixTango
