Should I quit my job?
    #7283082 - 08/10/07 10:20 PM (17 years, 1 month ago)

Ive been working at my current job for about 4 months now and they pay is great...but money isnt a priority in my life right now (im still young). Well anyway about 2 months ago my boss started making fun of my religious beliefs and political beliefs (christian/republican). At first i brushed it off and laughed because i figured he was joking. But he kept on mocking me about my beliefs. I started to think he wasnt joking because he kept asking me "why I believe in the stuff i do". I proceeded to tell him that what he was doing was a small form of brainwashing. He proceeded to do it about every week until about last week monday he could finally tell i was about to snap and tab him in the neck with my pen...

Well he brought it back up today...During my lunch I walked to our HR department and scheduled a meeting for monday next week. I dont want to get him fired...I just want to be able to quit without giving a two week notice. I feel if tell him im leaving in two weeks he will nag at me even more..but i was wondering am i giving him to much of a break I mean he is always laughing when he says the stuff so it makes me think he is just joking but he never stops with it. Should I be pushing for more punishment for him? I mean Im pretty sure I could sue the company (which is not what i want to do)...tell me what you people think

thanks,
AG Tek

i don't think you should quit but you definitely don't need to take that shit, going to HR is a good idea. this guy probably harasses others as well, you'll be doing the company a favor. anyhow, tell HR what happen but don't request punishment, otherwise it makes it look like you are just going after him.

When I get teased I ALWAYS tease back. Using profanity is always best to get across the point you do not like being picked on.

Here's a good example of what I'd say in a mock conversation if I were you:

Boss: So being a republican is gay. I can't believe you're a George Bush supporter!

Rail_Gun: At least George Bush has a tighter asshole than your mom. She's loose as shit!

Boss: How dare you say about my mom!? My mom is dead!

Rail_Gun: Nerd.

sorry i forgot to mention i think im the only one hes harassing...imthe youngest one who works there by 8 years...so im getting the impression he is singling me out because of my age. So why not single him out right? and its not that like im a hardcore religious freak. I go to church on holidays like easter thanksgiving and christmas and thats about it...its just i dont think that kind of shit should belong in the workplace what so ever and im sure most would agree and i think ive expressed this to him before..i think he likes pissing me off

Don't just stoop to his level, exceed it by at least a factor of 10. Seriously. When I was a kid, I got bullied for a long time, until I fought back. Same with shit talking. If someone insults you you gotta stand up for yourself because no one else will. Breath fire and stand your ground, don't just take it. Honestly, it sounds like your boss is just a shit talker. He get his kicks from your reaction. You can deal with that type yourself.

Get thicker skin. You mentioned that money isn't a priority in your life, so you're in a spot where you can live with just up and quitting your job? Do you have a trust fund or something?

Here's a sad truth to the working world. Every job you work at, there will be someone there you don't like, and it's usually your boss. For whatever reason, you will always want to stab them in the eyes with thumbtacks. Just be strong, stand up for yourself then brush it off your shoulder and move on. If you want to move up in business ever, which obviously you don't now cause you're ready to walk out the door because you're boss is a meaniehead, you need to realize that it's not always best to involve others, HR, higher ups, etc. in your personal squabbles. The best employees are the ones who don't create even more headache for their superiors Who are strong enough, and have enough backbone to stick up for themselves when need be, and brush off things that really don't matter at the end of the week when you go to the bank and cash your paycheck.

My motto on work comes from Goodfellas: "Fuck you. Pay me!"

Then quit. Don't go to HR, just tell the motherfucker off in front of the entire office and go out with a bang. Shit, you're quitting anyway and obviously don't care. Why waste your time with that nonsense? I only had the opportunity to do that once, at a bar I worked at for 4 years. The last 6 months, this complete ass goblin bought the place and became manager. I let him have it one night in front of like 20 customers and 4 other employees. I through my shit down, grab my tip money and gave a final "peace, I'm outta here".

"fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, you're cool, fuck you"

damn to bad there wasnt at least 2 more people i hate i could pull the skit from half baked off. Iwas told to go to HR and give them my story and why i was quitting so when i get another job and they call my previous company (where i work now) I dont look like some irresponsible young kid who got tired of working and got up and left.

that kind of action is all well and good, but it has no tact and won't get anything done really. by going to HR you will have the last laugh as the complaint will follow him throughout his whole career there. doing something immature like getting all pissed off and quitting makes you look like a jackass and won't affect the other dude for anything. passive aggressive is the way to go with management, but that is just the way i see it.

When someone asks me about what I believe (religion), I tell them...that is something I consider very personal, which to me it is. So I don't openly talk about my beliefs, I can count the number of people I trust with one hand.

Where I'm going with this is, you opened up yourself to this guy...what you didn't know, is that he was going to exploit that as your weakness. He knows that saying that stuff is getting to you, maybe seeing how you will react, who knows...people are fucked up man.

if everyone was a democrat (which i assume you are) life in this country would be boring. strife is the ultimate entertainment.

Having worked in HR - IF YOU START TO ENGAGE IN HIS KIND OF HARASSMENT YOU HAVE NO CASE.

You are being harassed .

Age and religious discrimination. Possibly sexually too (any references to sex jokes or other wise is sexual harassment.)

You need to tell your HR person NOW.

You need to document every singe thing he sez
by sending an email to the HR rep and your self.

DO NOT QUIT you will have no case -HR will not represent you any more if you are not an employee.

you need to pursue this.

I have had the same thing happen to me, although I am a pagan/liberal/woman - and I had the supervisor fired for sexual/religious harassment.

Harassment is not a funny thing to business. You could SUE, and they dont want that.

Do not tell him you are working with HR - HR will contact him, and THAT will shrink his balls.

OoD

best advice evar!

the only thing to add is check the 'eaves dropping' laws for the state and see
if it's legal to record your own conversations, get him on tape several times
and there's no backing out of it. some laws may prohibit it, others are pretty
lax when you are an involved party, many prohibit it only if it's a 3rd party
recording
