My Homemade 1000 Star Starceiling

I'm always amazed by a clear nightsky. A glass roof wasn't an option and you can't see many stars where I live(too much city-light), so I thought about making a artificial starceiling in my bedroom. This has very likely been done before, but I like to design it all from scratch and solve all problem myself.
Here is what I did:
I ordered 1 km (= 0.6 mile) of 0.5mm thick fibreglass - €80 18 white LED's and resistors for 12V -> 3.6V - €10 18 polystyrene plates (1m x 0.5m, 2cm thick) - €20 2 transformers AC->DC ; 220V -> 3-12V - €15 Lots of duck tape and some electric wires and tools - €30 Total costs: €150 = $190
The plan was to make 18 individual starceiling plates, each with its own LED and fibres. The 18 plates together form a nightsky.
I used this program to generate the nightsky on the date and location where I was born(just for fun). More than 1000 stars. This is the result:
Then I used Rasterbator to create this nightsky image(mirrored and negative) in the size of my room on A4 size pages that I printed.
I used these papers to mark the stars on the polystyrene plates. I made holes at the marks.
I connected the LEDs and resistors:
I cut the fibres and bundled them. I put the fibres through the holes in the plates. I put a LED in front of the fibre bundle.
I wired my ceiling to power the LED's on the plates:
Then I glued the plates to my ceiling and connected the LED's to the wires on my ceiling:
Here is the result, this is only 1/3th of my ceiling, I couldn't make a picture of my whole ceiling:
And here a few images stiched together to get an idea of the whole ceiling:
It took a lot of time(25hours) to make all the plates and I'm still not 100% finished, but almost done. I enjoyed the design process, but I dislike the repetitive work. It's worth it though.
It's even better in combination with some mushrooms

Very cool. It would be cool to use different color LEDs for different sized stars. It would also be neat to use multiple LEDs per panel, and blink them on and off randomly from time to time to get a twinkle effect. I bet that is crazy looking when you get it done.

I thought about the twinkle effect, but didn't want to make it too complex because I wanted to really make this. I have many ideas, but most never make it into the real world. It had to be relative simple to keep me focused on this project long enough to actually make it

Planets , Nebula, Milky way check out this VIDEO " http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=202995237083680344&hl=en-GB " hope this link works.

I did something similar for my little sister when we she was little, but 1000+ LEDs was way too much to deal with, so I compromised and used LEDs for a few of the bright stars and dots of fluorescing paint for the rest. A UV lamp in the corner lights them up almost as bright as LEDS.
It turned out so cool, I almost made her swap bedrooms with me.

That is super-cool, I have serious respect for DIYers.
I was thinking of getting one of these, but I doubt it would compare.

that is awesome, man. good job.
for the twinkling effect, how about this: 1) get some cheap optical fiber. 2) replace some of the lights with tripled up fiber optics (3 strands per hole.) 3) create 3 light boxes and put them on random timers. 4) run one of the fibers from each hole to a different box.
as they randomly came on and off, they would increase and decrease in intensity, and sometimes flicker out for a short time.
just my 2 cents, but optical fiber would make a 'twinkling effect' easier to accomplish no matter how you went about it.

Excellent work, wish I had the time and/or motivation to do something like that to my room.
