Theres a river behind my house...
    #7261980 - 08/05/07 11:49 AM (16 years, 7 months ago)

I was thinking about setting up a generator.

Anybody have any experience with this?

What sort of generator would be the most effecient and how do I store the electricity?

Would the grid buy spare electric off me?

How does a river generator compare to solar panels? I'm thinking it would make alot more energy than solar panels.

So many questions!

You'd have to dam the river to get any useful energy out of it.

I wish I had the knowledge to help ya out.
But this is a pretty cool site, with some information!
I'd love to be able to power my own home with alternative energy someday soon

that depends on how far the river drops over, say, 100'. if there were a small rapids section because the elevation dropped, he could create a flume to carry the water to a center feed paddle wheel. if the torque were high enough, he could gear it up to create quite a bit of electricity.

I've seen people generate decent (enough for ~250 watts) from three to four feet of water head. But you are both correct, without a change in elevation, you are not going to generate much power.

I've been interested in this for awhile. My proposed site for a mushroom farm has a creek running through it. It's flow is widely variable.

Your post sparked more curiousity and I found a good website:
http://www.canyonhydro.com/Resources/Guide/HydroGuide1.htm

here is an important calculation from that website for a proposed site:

hypothetical kw = HEAD(feet) x FLOW (cfs)/11.81
