http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RI385O/ref=nosim/?tag=yahoo-lawn-20

I saw a bag of this at the hardware store today and I'm I was thinking is this a better choice than vermiculture? it says it on the bag but I'm skeptical.

your thoughts please

I dunno if there is chemicals in there or not. If it's chemical free, then buy it, try it, and report back.

You could be on to something.

Also note:

the advertisement says better then verm in regard to plants. Mushrooms are not plants.

Also it doesn't say what that potting soil is composed of. i'm sure it's something like a Jiffy-mix or a MGMC hybrid potting soil. I'd still stick with verm for anything mushrooms related that calls for verm. If you want a "out of the bag" casing mix, pick up some MGMC; All you have to do is pasteurize it.

There is no potting soil . The product is added to potting soil , it's just the additive . It say's it provides good drainage , I thought we were looking for moisture retention ,

I really can't say yes or no until I saw it a little better . A lot would depend on it's ability to absorb moisture . and chemical properties .

I know better then to say it won't work right now .though , I've seen a lot of things work for peeps that I might not of thought would work ,lol:grin:

Check it out and give it a go .

People swear by it as a straight casing. I think it's some combination of perlite and vermiculite?

I doubt you'd want to use this stuff for PF; maybe someone who's used it as casing could speak to what's inside?

It's hard to say whether this would be a suitable material for anything without some pictures of the actual substance, or at least a good description for it.

RR once said that the reason vermiculite's so good for all the things it's used for is that it's got amazing water absorption, making it a good casing material, and essential for cakes, which won't get any of their water for colonisation (and even fruiting, if you don't dunk) from anywhere else.

Also, for cakes, it'll need a light, fluffy texture, so hyphae have an easy time permeating it.
