Thermal Carnage?

A friend's learning disabled Tygustopher McTubesteaken puppet is incubating w/ a frowned upon heating pad covered w/ a rack & two layers of a towely. His jars are in plastic in the box they came in, and the heating pad is set on the hugely variable "low" setting. After heating the box overnight it was warm to the touch on the bottom. Upon examining the jars, they seemed to not have lost too much moisture (visibly moist), but show no signs of m after 3 days. I'm sorry if it sounds like the puppet is bieng overly anxious , but I have to ask--did it kill the spores? Thank you very much for any advice.

Doubtful unless the entire jar went up to over 120 for 4 or more hours. Wait a few more days and see if you have any growth. Keep it at room temp!

I don't think they got that hot...I'm going with your room temp advice (less to stress anyway). Thanks

You just have to wait & see if you cooked them. After this, use a timer on the heat pad -- 4 on 4 off -- works to keep the temp down. Six Tango

Try this: Put the heating pad on top of the plastic container and then wrap the whole deal in a blanket or something similar. The container will still heat up, and as long as your holes are taped, the jars wont loose moisture. And, the jars wont be heated directly by the pad. If you dont want to tape your holes, then Id recommend a water-heated incubator and a small hepa filter.

Thanks for the advice...I'm using a timer for now and plan on putting together something water-heated for future incubation.
