Problem Growing Invitro
    #726637 - 07/06/02 04:02 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

After growing 2 jars invitro a lot of the mushrooms looked either bruised significantly or they were starting to rot. Has anybody else seen this and if so is there a way to stop it?

With out a time frame its hard to tell, Yes they will definatly bruise, A rotting mushroom looks black and slimy, take a look at your cake if its still nice and white they probably are not roting, if it looks bad you have problems.

lets clarify. growing invitro, usually means that you are fruiting the cakes while they are still in the jar. this is a tek that is usually reserved for certain gormet species, or is the result of an accident, or is the result of neglecting to use the proper shaped jar, so that the collonized cake is impossible to remove whole. still, growing invitro has its benefits, particularly lower contam rates. i'm not sure it would be worth the bother.

as near as i can tell, you simply have some aborts. nothing to fear, remove any mishapen, malforming turning blue or black mushrooms. they are still suitable for use, in fact some people prefer aborts because thay are typicaly more potent.

if you are growing cubensis invitro, then make sure to cover the bottom three quarters of the jar with something dark like tin foil taped to the outside of the jar. otherwise you will have good mushrooms that sprout from deep in the jar, and will abort before you have a chance to get to them with a pair of chopsticks.

the whole premise of growing invitro is stealth .... and if you have mushies growing all over your jar it would be a larger yeild then taping and forcing them to grow on the top... so what if you have funky lookin shrooms they look like that after their dried anywho..... just my 2 cents
