make sure your monotub is tall enough.
you want around 6-8 inches between your bottom and top holes.
you want your bottom holes 6 inches off the bottom. or maybe 5.5 inches.
the substrate in a monotub should be five inches.
use an opaque colored tub. cut a hole in the top and replace it with plexi-glass. it is so super easy to do.
there you go, monotub done.
^^all just my opinion, as always^^

Agreed. But I use only about 2 to 3 inhces of poo in my monotub.
And if you are lucky, home depot will have a tub like I have in my signature, with an opaque base and clear lid so you wont have to bother with plexiglass.

the reason for 2 monotubs is to be able to control proper temp better
first monotub fill with 1/4 water, put a submersible water heater, adjust the temp you want place the second monotub inside the first, the one with water
poof
I hope that answered your question

yay another thread with a bunch of info yet nobody answered the question.
monotub and double tub are the same exact principle, basically the same thing.
a monotub is... one tub, with a lid on it.
a double tub is, two tubs. instead of a lid, one tub is right side up, and another matching tub is placed upside down on top as the lid. this makes it taller. a nifty way to go about it is to find a particular tub that comes in different colors, use an opaque one for the bottom and a clear one for the top.
if you find one tub that is tall enough (yet you have enough substrate to make it thick enough) then you can use just one. like somebody mentioned, an opaque one with a clear lid is nice. otherwise an opaque one, with a hole cut w/plexi works great too, just a little more work/materials.

They'll have large sheets of it for sale, yes. You may have to do a little cutting if you want a perfect fit.

eight holes per monotub.
four each on the long sides.
two near the bottom, two near the top.
the bottom ones should be about 5-6 inches from the bottom of the tub.
the top ones should be about 6-8 inches above the bottom ones.

What size holes would you use for say a 22 gallon tub? I know the DT TEK says 1" but that seems kind of small...

1.5 inch-2 inch.
I use 35 gallon tubs with two inch holes.
I tried a few with 12 and 16 holes, seem to work about the same. hole placement is the key.

I as well only use 3 inches of substrate. 5 sounds kick ass though. Too bad I already drilled holes in the tubs. Double tub is just a tub with anoth tub upside down on it. I see no advantage of a dub tub over a monotub but I like monotub. BTW monstermitch... Im using your tek and I will have a log up with lots of pics sometime soon
