some polarity against Christianity is understandable because it is still run in small sectors and to an extent "at large" in the ways that it used to be when it annihilated science and did a lot of heinous things

but a lot of it that i've noted is just teenage foolhardiness

I didn't know that...
And I don't think its entirely true.

First of all, there are other nuances of people (regarding their beliefs or ideologies) from Christians to defenders of science and rationality. There are those who want/try to keep a balance between those two, there are Buddhists, new agers, people who are atheists but don't necessarily sustain science, Muslims and the list could go on.
And each of them, from my own observations can become aggressive when contradicted.
So my suspicion is it's their own personal constructs (personality) which makes them behave like that rather than the ideologies they sustain. Even though in some cases, the type of anger they manifest can relate to their life style they chose.

Also, what I've noticed and I think it's important to point out is that some Christians don't become so angry and defensive is because they seem to be guided by the ancestral principle of "turning the other cheek", which doesn't come from a high sense of awareness or spirituality but from a messianic complex they developed.

Very few people on these web forums are Christians and that's why very few Christians get angry.:monkeydance::tongue:

This subject interests me mainly because I have been scared away from these forums before just because it seems so male-dominated and aggresive here. Sometimes when I read threads visions of men sword fighting with their genitalia run through my head.

I think young male Christians can be just as intolerant...

My guess is it's all that testosterone seething though them young male bodies (younger men tend to have more, no?)

Higher testosterone levels = higher desire for dominance

An interesting article Scientific American told me so:

http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?articleID=7DE01F25-E7F2-99DF-30D2199FCD555450

Yeah, it seems kind of obvious, but as a women, it's nice to keep in mind when occasionally baffled by male behavior.

I haven't digested most webforums that I've tried well. Even newsgroups
for people passionately interested in small areas of knowledge that I
think are fun attack each other. These attackers and bad name throwers are
professors and PhD students.

I've never really involved myself in any sort of online community either. I often join and just lurk. I find it really interesting to read through forums, partially because I'm very introverted and don't have a chance to talk to different kinds of people nearly as much as I'd like to. But yes, the attacks throw me off, especially when they're delivered with such cut-throat confidence and backed up with a body of knowledge that faaaar exceeds my own. Then I get all "well, what the hell do I know- I'd be better off reading a book right now"

Hrmm...sounds like someone I know.

Be wary of Scientific American. Lots of presuppositions in their science
that those writers'll never be able to question.

Reading it is my way of baby-stepping towards science. I've always been more of an English and liberal arts kind of person, but now I feel utterly fed up with all the BS papers I write. I'm interested in science, but I guess I'm going with the stuff that's easier for me to understand considering I have such a weak background. But it's a good warning to keep in mind- it's mainstream, I suppose, so they'll have stay in the box to a certain extent.

If we glance quickly through gender studies literature we'll see excellent
arguments for and empirical studies supporting how male violence is
for the most part (if not fully) a "cultural construct". Now I'll drink
some water to rinse my mouth out...or wash my typing hands off...

I was referring more to dominance than violence...though the two things often overlap.

The "male-ness" I refer to in terms of dominance is something I think men and w women can possess BTW. I just think hormones definitely make a difference, though a person isn't a slave to or defined by that physical aspect.

An acquaintance of mine had a sex change operation a few years ago. Female-to-male. She was medicated with a lot of hormones during the transition, and she/he said that it was a big surprise for him to experience the constant horniness that is included in the typical experience of being a male.

A positive side effect for me was that my wife showed a bit more understanding for my "needs" after hearing this story.

Young males get angry BUT

I would take your theory a step further...

Its people as a whole - they start off, as children, completely open-minded to the world because they are learning whats around them.

The problem comes when they stop learning, they think because they've built up a reasonable logic map in their heads that they've worked out everything!

I notice that the older the person gets the more insane this defense of old logic maps becomes! Try telling and old person something different about their point of view - they will not accept it (there are exceptions) they will come out with more and more shit to defend their old ideas and may even get angry if you really have good evidence for your case.
