 when asked for birthday gifts

my girlfriend wants me to write a list of things i would want for my birthday. while i have about a million practical things i need, I feel like listing them seems... self indulgent?
ill write her the list i guess, though typically i feel better letting people close to me figure these things out themselves.

Why don't you tell her that instead? It seems like she needs to know how you feel.
It SEEMS like it kind of hurts you that she can't pick out a thoughtful gift for you without you making a list of ideas for her. (This is the implied emotion that I picked up on anyway.) And you're damn right... being your long-term S.O., she should be able to pick you out something nice to surprise you.
Obviously not a huge deal, but it is the little things in a relationship that make it shine...
So why don't you just tell her what's in the quote box...

It makes it a lot easier on people to list things you want for your birthday or Christmas. I hate when people give me no help at all in letting me know what they want.
With significant others though, it shouldn't be too difficult for people to figure it out by themselves.

I dunno i personally hate it when people who are close to me ask me. It really makes me question how close they really are. it's like we talk, we know each others interests, we can somewhat project what we'll like. i don't get what the big hullaballo is all about.
