North of Atlanta you're looking for mostly Pan Subbs. Cubes are very rarely found north of atlanta, so don't get your hopes set on them. Hit up mainly horse pastures to find those Panaeolus subbalteatus.

oh and another question, is it a bad idea to pick the younger shrooms? does this prevent them from reproducing later on or is it alright to snag em' all?

Typically you would want to leave the younger guys there to mature and sporoulate, this will help ensure the health of the mycelium and keep your patch alive and strong. You also want to cut the mushrooms, not yank them out... It can damage the mycelial network and kill your patch :\

Uh... up by Chattanooga? You sure they were cubes? They may have been, but just becuase you found them that far north, doesn't mean everyone else will. They definately aren't *as common* north of Atlanta as they are in say.. Macon or Valdosta. I didn't say it wasn't possible, just not common.

Cubies tend to grow just about anywhere south of I-20 (as it is rumored). I have picked MANY off of 75s (think exits around 225-). Anywhere around there and all the way down to Florida will harbor many finds. Valdosta is greeeat for shroomin'. If you want to go that far south, think Valdosta, Tifton, Omeaga, etc. It is told that these places will hold many more shroomies than Florida even! Macon is WAAAAY south (though not as far as Valdosta). Take 75 south down 1.5-2 hrs south of the peremiter. I have never been there for fungi purposes, though that sounds like a good idea!
The new and incredibly potent welli's are growing around your area (little north of ATL) so do a search here in the forum and happy hunting!
Peace.
