If there is another planet out there somewhere with beings living on it why do we automatically assume they are "advanced"? Couldn't they be like simple cave men?

I think the chances of SETI are INCREDIBLY slim. Think about it.Even if there IS an alian race advanced to us, and within range of SETI, The chances that they still have machines dedicated to listening for FM/AM/whatever radio sugnals is unlikely, unless they are predicting/hoping a less advanced civilization would contact them. But if that was the case, and they were intending to make contact, they would contact us first.
Also, the chances that they are close to our stage technology-wise is slim-to-none, also. I mean, we only had radios for about a hundred years, and that is a tiny, tiny, tiny piece of the universal time pie. It would be an even larger coincidence that 2 sentient beings would be in the same stage of technological advancement.
Oh, and StrandedVoyager, ATS is a good site. There are just too many crackpots onn there, you have to admit. I'm a member but not active I usually just lurk around. Whats your username there?

I agree. A radio or TV broadcast from Earth can be picked up at a distance of 0.0001 light-years if the aliens point a 300m dish antenna exactly towards the Earth. Further than that and the signal is lost in background noise. The carrier wave itself might be detected to a distance of 0.3 light-years. Our second closest star is 4.3 light-years distant, and the galaxy is 100 000 light-years across. Looking for random radio broadcasts is just a waste of time.

if there was another advanced civilization i dont think they would be using obsolete low tech communication like radio waves.
The electromagnetic field is an excellent medium for long-range signalling, so I think advanced civilizations would continue to use it. But they won't broadcast. They will beam radio waves directly towards their targets. Such signals are not detectable unless you are in the path of the beam.

Maybe it's not that there are no aliens out there. Maybe it's because the aliens are here and they don't want to be known yet.

Or maybe we're the aliens.
