fruiting question
    #7235353 - 07/29/07 12:06 AM (16 years, 8 months ago)

i just put my first cake in my friuting chamber today. my chamber is a opaque rubbermaid with 2" of parelite in the bottom 3/4s full of watter. i have an airline running in and a bubble wand under the parelite. do i have to "fan" whatever that means and how much if i do. my temp stays at 72 and the humidity is 98%

Sea of shrooms is casing cakes, right?

It works, if so. As I always say, total eventual yield, without contamination, is going to be pretty much equal no matter how you fruit it. It's a function of total nutritious material in the substrate. Casing, like that seen in "sea of shrooms", is going to give you your yield more quickly, most of it coming in the very first flush.

yes, you should fan. fanning is the process of bring in fresh air into the fruiting chamber in order to prevent contaminations from growing on your cakes/casings. stagnant air is a breeding ground for mold and contams, so fan often, or get a fan on a timer to do the work for you. some people do it 3 times a day, others put a fan on a timer for once an hour, or even more frequently than that. its all preference, but better fan or else your cakes will befall the same fate my did. mold eats them inside out and you gotta toss them out.

and yes, sea of shrooms is good from what i've read.

IME, I find using stuff like an airline and a "bubble wand" unnecessary. I reccomend fanning 3 times a day if possible... Everything sounds okay other than that, I guess. Just my .02

sounds alright except this
> 2" of parelite in the bottom 3/4s full of watter.<
the perlite should be drained and maybe a little deeper 4"+.
if anyone could post a link to RR's automated fae tek, might be a helpful read.

:grin:I would suggest fanning as often as you can, depending the size of the container per how many cakes you have in there, those mushrooms will put off CO2 and fanning 3 times a day is sufficient but the more you can fan and get FAE the better your chances of having some monsters grown off cakes..

4"? What the hell?

People are always suggesting deeper perlite, and sure, that's ideal--but I've really never even seen a photo of a FC that actually has 4" of perlite in it.

That's a shit-ton of perlite for any FC of considerable dimensions.

I usually try to have at least 3+, If I have enough perlite on hand you can bet I'm getting it close to 4 thought, well drained is pretty key also..

any perlite that is under water is not not going to be evaporating moisture into your fc,and standing water can become a stagnant breading- ground for bacteria.

a fan in the chamber maybe too much, from past experience I had a FC with a bunch of holes in it RR style and a fan nearby in the same room and it dried out my perlite hella fast..

3" of well drained perlite, with as many fannings as you can manage. Thats really all you need.

I would ditch the bubble wand and fan by hand.

I have a 10 dollar box fan next my chamber resting on a smaller box to keep it partially elevated above the chamber. I take of the top of the box twice a day and run the fan for 10 or 15 minutes. It's pushing fresh air into the chamber quite effectively.
