The Taoist Immortals ~ The Pill of Immortality

So lately I've been reading "the tales of the taoist immortals" by Eva Wong, and in the stories a few of the sages attain immortality by going into the mountains searching for herbs and minerals, they then go through long alchemical processes and create the pill of immortality... when they take it, they fly of to the celestial realm.
So what do you guys think is IN the pill?

Likely it is a placebo, allowing them to transcend the self-imposed limits of their material existence.

I think these sages also created an ancient viagra pill and kept it a secret from the world
If the soul survives the body, why go for immortality?

First, the Pill is real.
In the future, humans will create a completely fake, lifelike reality: virtual reality. It will be used to create a superficial Celestial Afterlife.
What is the ultimate goal of virtual reality technology? I think about being able to take someone who has died, retrieve his brain, preserve it, fire it up and connecting it to a Reality Synthesizer. To experience paradise indefinitely, perhaps for eternity, with other beings. The Matrix, right?
Before this person died, he specified the exact conditions under which he would be reincarnated into the virtual afterlife. And of course there's not just ONE afterlife. Think of the possibilities. World of Warcraft freaks and shit.
Until the day we meet the Supreme Other Overlords Of It All and discover the true Celestial Realm.

Why? Why do we think that we cannot traverse nothingness unscathed, since nothingness is where we come from?

What if there was a glitch and he ends up in hell indefinitely. I would never trust a machine to manage my afterlife.
Besides heaven and hell we already experience in this world, coursing through every moment of our lives.

Maybe the pill included some sort of entheogen?
In many of the immortal stories when a person is given the pill of immortality he is forever transformed in consciousness but does not leave for the spirt realm immediately, and lives long past their experience when the pill was ingested....
